So, what is the mind?

According to wikipedia,
"the mind is a set of cognitive facilities including consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, language and memory. It is usually defined as the faculty of an entity's thoughts and consciousness. It holds the power of imagination,recognition and appreciation and is responsible for processing feelings and emotions, resulting in attitudes and actions."
From the above definition, everything we do as humans, be it good or bad, is conceived in the mind. So for example, if our minds, or permit me to use the word "heart", are filled with filthy thoughts, we are bound to do filthy things and vice versa.
There's a saying from the Bible in Proverbs 4:23:
"Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts".
The obvious question arises: how do we guard our hearts? How do we control the state of our minds?
