She was startled once again when the phone rang but became instantly relaxed when she saw it was Jack.
“Could you come over tonight Lila? You are right. I am upset and we need to discuss what we’re going to do about this.”
“Sure, I’ll come straight from work. I’ll bring a few beers and take-out. You just make sure you clean up that place Jack Houston.”
Lila struggled to focus after talking to Jack but she knew he always had a plan. He was the one person she could always trust. With no further interruptions, Lila was able to complete her report just before five o clock. She couldn’t get out of the office fast enough and nearly knocked over Jeff when closing her office door.
“You’re in a hurry, do you have a date?”
“No, I’m just tired. It was a long day.”
She walked next to Jeff and tried not to look rushed. As soon as they reached the parking garage she made her way to her car as quickly as possible. She was the first one out after the car search and drove straight to the Chinese restaurant to pick up their food.
She ordered just before she left the office. Lentil soup and freshly baked bread. They were the only take-out restaurant in this area who had their own greenhouse and bakery. This made the food even more expensive, but at least it was fresh and edible and not from a tin.
These days everyone was vegans, but not by choice. Lila couldn’t even remember the last time she had a piece of meat or chicken. It was scarce and expensive. The few animals that survived the drought, were being pumped full of hormones, and ever since the new nutrition tablet was developed by the Aayala species, very few people ate real food anymore.
Most people didn’t have time to eat, and in their worlds of virtual reality, food was the last thing on their list. It was easier and less time consuming to swallow a tablet three times a day, before entering their own virtual reality world again.
On 24 January 2012 life changed for everyone on earth when the Aayala species landed on earth. Sightings were seen everywhere on various continents and communication was established not long after. In the beginning, everyone thought it would be the end of humanity but the Aayala species meant no harm and they came to help Earth.
The Aliens behaved like spiritual beings and came in peace. The Ayala looked similar to humans, except for that they were all taller and both males and females had blonde hair. They were part of the Nordic Aliens coming from the Pleiades.
The Aayala species were an extremely intelligent species. They communicated with the government about the problems they were foreseeing for the earth in the future and ultimately the government accepted their help and welcomed them with open arms. In return, they would share their knowledge and technology which were far more advanced than earth.
There was a long list of rules to obey for both the Aayala and the humans, but the major ones were that there should be respect between the species at all times, and no close relationships were to be formed. Should there be any disrespect or if any close relationships come to light, it would be investigated and could result in the death penalty.
They kept the jury system, as this seemed like the most effective way to rule out any discrepancies. In the beginning, both species kept to themselves, but as they shared their knowledge more humans became open-minded and accepted the Aayala. They co-inhabited the earth in harmony for years, but then a brutal virus appeared out of the blue and many of the Aayala died.
Even with vigorous testing and experiments, their own doctors could not come up with a cure. The government even suspected chemical warfare but no proof could be found.
The virus affected both humans and the Aayala because they became so dependent on each other. It had a vast effect on the intelligence on earth. Lila shuddered to think of the mass graves everywhere when she was a little girl, and it would be a sight that she would remember for the rest of her life.
Then the inevitable happened. Exactly what the Aayala predicted. Earth could no longer sustain itself, and nothing could be done to turn around the excruciating effects of global warming.
People were literally left in the dark and started to cut down trees to generate heat and electricity. The few people left in this area worked together with the Aayala to find a possible solution to what they expected was coming.
After the invention of the nutrition tablet, pollution was reduced by nearly eighty percent, but it was still not enough to save the earth. It was too late.
