Hello fellow Steemers,
Allow me to indroduce you to my top 3 most absurd and bizzare mental illness that have been witnessed and defined by Psychiatrists, psychologists, and neurologists..
- Cotard's Delusion.
The Cotard delusion is a rare psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that he or she is dead, does not exist, is putrefying or has lost their blood or internal organs. Rarely, it can include delusions of immortality. Basically you walk the world thinking you are dead, Cogito ergo sum much?
- The Paris Syndrom.
Paris syndrome is a condition exclusive to Japanese tourists and nationals, which causes them to have a mental breakdown while in the famous city.
The tourist slips in psychological and physical shock because IDEA OF PARIS vs ACTUAL PARIS is quite different.
Every year, roughly 20 japanese tourists are hospitalized (and rapatriated) for symptoms such as hallucinations, vomiting, paranoïa and psychosomatique symptoms (sweating, tachycardia...)
- Drapetomania
This one is my favorite because of how idiotically daring it was to actually categorize it as an illness. From the greek ''runaway frenzy''. In 1851, American physician Samuel A. Cartwright described an illness that caused an inexplicable urge for slaves to run away. Apparently this illness was common, hard to believe (lol) ! Cartwright prescribed "whipping the devil out of them" as a "preventative measure".
Thanks For Reading :)
