What I've learnt from 7 days of being a Dad!

in #life8 years ago

So on Monday my son was born!

After today is the seventh day he has been here and this is what I have learnt so far:

1: Sleep deprivation is terrifying!
Over the past 7 days I have managed a grand total of 4.5 hours of sleep. Currently my son has taken to screaming and crying from about 12am to 3am. Both myself and my partner are rocking enormous bags under our eyes and a splitting headache. My partner had not slept at all for the first 3 days and as a result she was suffering from hallucinations. Terrifying to say the least!

2: The bowel movements are incredible
The urinating and shitting has been unbelievable. Today the boy managed to do the most incredible bowel movement of all time. Whilst wiping his arse, I lifted his legs and he proceeded to do the most explosive shit of all time. His poo flew across to my arm, hit me in the face and managed to travel over 1.5 feet across the room, from the changing table to the carpet and wardrobe. Somehow I was not angry or annoyed. Definitely panicked though! Then had to scrub the carpet for over 1 hour. I have found it truly amazing how responsible I have felt since the moment he was born.

3: Love and fear has never really been experienced until this point!
For the first time ever, I feel completely overwhelmed with responsibility, excitement and love. I can't describe how terrifying it is to know that for the rest of my life I am responsible for his welfare and to provide the best possible opportunities for the future.
I considered posting a photo of the boy along with this article, but a big push myself and Mrs will be making in the future is him being cautious with what he posts online and I am not one for hypocrisy so the photos of him will remain away from the internet as much as possible.

I am very aware it has only been 7 days and this is a role that requires lifelong learning, but I have never been more excited about a journey than I am now.

Much love,

Greatmb

Happy Father's Day and Congrats! Please send your Mrs our love as well.

Let her know that most libraries have board books, now...this way you dont have to spend a fortune. And used bookstores are great too.

And always have a bottle of Lysol Disinfectant to spray all new toys with 24 hours before giving to the cuteness. Store germs suck until after the first six months. It will make your lives easier :)

Have a ton of fun. And oooooh wait until the little one learns to kiss (around 4 to six months) -- open mouth. Oh the drool is gross, but you melt into a pile of mush. I still do.

Happy Father's Day!

You new best friends are the Wonder Pets and all silly noises :)

Good luck Greatmb. My kids are both early 20's now. I remember when they were first born like yesterday.
Congratulations.

much appreciated man! 1 more week of paternity before back lecturing!

For the first few months going back to work will seem like a holiday :-)

I relate to you there @greatmb...sleep depravation is a challenge. It does get easier I believe so, thanks for sharing.

I just posted about celebrating my first Fathers Day as well.
