So we all want to grow in our career, that's why we work hard. Career growth is one of the most important things in life and this is why people get stressed when they can grow in their career. When you get a promotion you not only get a monetary benefit but a also authority and influence which also important for your work satisfaction. I decided to write my own personal experience when it comes to personal growth. I have learned by making mistakes but I don't want it to happen with others so I thought of sharing the lessons that I learnt which helped me become successful in my career.
Build a rapport with you team:
Being a team player is one of the most important traits that one should have to be successful in career. If you have good rapport with you colleagues they will trust you, help you and will not hesitate to ask for help from you. If you don't work in a team or your role asks you to work alone then you should always think how can you help people who will be impacted by your work.
Ownership:
To understand ownership is something that comes from within us. When you decide to step out of your comfort zone and work towards something that is not your responsibility then you are taking ownership.
When you take ownership you gain trust and confidence of your manager and your team. If you just do what is expected from you then it is not enough. You should always think what else you can do which will lead to better results for your team.
Make fewer mistakes:
So my manager once told me that 1 mistake overshadows 100 right things you do. I have experienced this personally. I worked very hard towards a project but one mistake got it all down. So it's important to understand that it is not always a good idea to take lot of risks sometimes you need to play it safe.
Learn to say no
There is a tendency that we take up too much work on ourselves and then it becomes very hard for us to complete any of it. If you try very hard then there is a tendency for us to make mistakes which is hazardous. So you should always see how much work you have in your plate, when you will be able to complete the work that you have and only then commit yourself to more. If you cannot commit then you should say no, it is important to tell the person why you cannot do the work depending on his or her authority.
Apart from these you should also let your manager know that you want to grow your career. If your manager doesn't know that you want a promotion he/she might not be able to recognize your efforts towards it. Yes many of us think that why should tell him/her that we want promotion doesn't he/she see my hard work already but if you tell him then he can help you do the right things. They groom you and mentor you who will help you understand what you really need to do to get a promotion. So if you want a promotion ask for it.
I would also want to tell that whatever I wrote comes from my personal experience. It might not be true in everyone's case. But if we follow these it will not only help us in getting promoted but it will also change our attitude towards our work. I hope this post helps you. I would love to know your thoughts and experiences. Let me know them in comment section.
