It is unlikely that lovers will get a lot of head on it, but a study reveals that the ten-second kiss carries 80 million bacteria.

In the human ecosystem live 100 billion microorganisms, outside and inside the body. People are not aware of them, but these organisms help in digestion and protection against disease. Without them, they would hardly survive.

The mouth is the hearth of about 700 different types of bacteria, while Dutch researchers from a research organization (TNO) have decided to explore what happens to them during kissing. The results were published in the magazine "Microbiome".

They worked with 21 couples, who had to first fill out a questionnaire on how often they kissed each day and how long the kiss lasted. Then they took samples from their mouths and tongues in order to determine what kind of microbes live in them.

They found that couples kissing quite often and long enough, which means an average of nine times a day, in the end have a very similar community of oral microbes.

Researchers also calculated how much their habitats change their microbes during French kissing. A couple had previously been drinking probiotic drinks, which contained easily identifiable bacteria. They found that 80 million bacteria were transferred during the ten-second kiss.

For those who want to know more, sputum bacteria "travel" more easily, while those in the tongue seem to be more durable.

Although a number of 80 million bacteria sounds terrific, this is actually a good thing because it is about a kind of "vaccine" and a structure of immune resistance to the exposure of various microorganisms.

"From this point of view, kissing is very healthy," said Dutch professor Remco Kort.
