💬 📷 🎸 Russian Circles at Strom, Munich — Review and Photos

As I had announced it here earlier, I went to a great show that took place here in Munich, and experienced the phenomenal post-rock/-metal formation Russian Circles from Chicago.

But first things first, it took a while for the club to open, so we had to wait quite a while outside in the cold at first.

The club was small and cozy and people dropped in slowly, so I strolled around a little.

If I already knew then I would have told the mixing console that it will have to do an enormous job later on:

Getting another beer was a mistake. Suddenly the club was packed, and you could hardly move anywhere anymore. The opening act Cloakroom was, well, I'll better say nothing.

The club is like a long tube, so it's difficult to get to a good spot, and you'll have to hold out there patiently until the main act. But so then, eventually they began:

The riffs and arrangements... unbelievable! I cannot believe how such a simple 3 man set-up can create such multi-layered interwoven song structures.

I had thought I'd be disappointed that they'd play with merely one guitar live, as I already knew their complex arrangements from their recordings, but wow, there was nothing missing! How was that possible? I don't think they used a playback tape, everything after all seemed to come from the heavily distorted bass guitar and the guitarist's effect pedals building up all the multi-faceted loops and feedbacks in real-time, how impressive is that! And boy was it loud, one of the loudest concerts I have ever been to! My ears were almost bleeding. But it was worth it. The mixing console, as mentioned, probably had a lot to do, input- and output-wise.

Applause applause applause!

U jelly u missed? Well no worries, someone put a full concert video in good quality from their current tour on teh tubez:

So you can witness this awesomeness that they are. Enjoy! But still I can tell you that you have to experience them live and in the flesh.
