So many today are unhappy. It is by calculated design that this epidemic of misery and dissatisfaction has plagued our world. The problem is modern society. While many forms of joy are offered, they are typically short-lived pleasantries that afflict the mind with addiction, oppressing us with psychological poverty once worn off, and compelling us to repeat the action again in order to find that joyous feeling once more. Television, computer games, social media and sex. There are millions of drugs presented by society to supply us with a quick fix of happiness - followed by a downswing and a stronger thirst for more of the same to regain that momentary high.
It must be this way. For society as we know it is dependent upon the continued and progressive buying and selling of goods and services. The moment that we all decide we no longer need that Netflix subscription, that Xbox, those diamond earrings or that car, is the very same moment that modern society falls flat on its face. It is for this reason that society is diametrically opposed to true and lasting happiness. It is for this reason, that since birth you have been taught to be unhappy. This is because someone who is truly happy has no need to fill their life with material possessions and gadgets that excite their minds. Someone who has found a perpetual joy in their existence has no need to work and spend their way towards exaltation above their peers. A person who has found contentedness in their position has very little need to participate in any of the games of society, and thus society has developed a tactical methodology towards crippling any sense of fulfilment from our lives in the hopes that it might survive.
But the question is; will you allow this misbegotten cult of commerce to dictate your emotional state? Will you allow society to teach how to overwhelm your innate sense of joy with lust and desire, fear and anxiety? Or will you decide to see through the charade and reclaim your power to decide upon what you will feel, and how you will live your life?
Your happiness is most certainly under attack. But recognising that this is the case, is the first step back towards joyfulness.
