It's a matter of decision. If you think carefully, it's something like this.
Idiots spread lies about me and because they are already lies, I can practically not do anything because I would spend a lot more time for "proving my innocence" to people who in fact do not even care about it, than the idiots would spend in order to invent new ones.
If I decide to ignore the idiots, I will probably be cast out of their society - because they are idiots, I do not want to hang out with them in the first place, so this is not really bad. See, no harm done to you, but they lose some company.
People who believe the words of these bastards will have to accept that they are also idiots themselves. Fortunately, there are very few people like that, because the credibility of the idiots is usually, very limited.
On the basis of this, you can conclude that this kind of behaviour on their part does not really concern you or affect your life in the social circles for which you actually care, and that any attempt to preserve a good name among idiots is really extremely unwise to do.
So when they do talk behind your back, simply fart in their direction. They will be annoyed, pissed and you will live a better life.
