Hello steemians,
June 12 1993 is a remarkable day in the history of Nigeria. The day the freest and fairest election took place between MKO Abiola and Bashir Tofa which Abiola won but was later annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida which led to a political crisis causing Gen. Sani Abacha to seize power later that year.
In 1994, MKO declared himself as the lawful president and was declared wanted and accused of treason. The then head of state, Gen sani Abacha ordered for his arrest and detainment. MkO Abiola later died in 1998 in suspicious circumstances.
Today in Nigeria June 12 is declared as the new democracy day and the honour of GCFR conferred on the late MKO Abiola.
MY PERSONAL INCIDENCE
On the 12th of June,2013 an incidence i will never forget happened
I woke up around 6:00 a.m on that fateful day, prepared in earnest to get ready for my morning lectures. Left the house for school around past 7:00 a.m so i could meet up with my 8:00a.m class. On my way to school i dialled his number several times it wasn't going through, my best friend i mean, my partner in crime. He had class in main campus while i had class in the town camp first then later in the main campus so i was sure to see him when i get there.
On getting to school, saw a group of angry students, amidst them were some of my colleagues so i quickly rushed to them to find out what the problem was and i was told they wanted to stage a peaceful protest. As to what cause you may ask, it was because my faculty was moved from town campus to the main campus in the middle of a session without consideration of the stress students in faculty of science would face. Furthermore, there was a free shuttle to and fro main campus and we were now asked to start paying hundred naira daily and this provoked the students.
The students initiated a peaceful protest, stopped ongoing classes. You can definitely remember this @lordjames .The number of students increased as more students joined in to share the grievances. By this time i was sure my best friend wasn't around as he was no where to be found during the entire movement. The peaceful protest started getting violent as students had a face off with the school peace corps force.
I and some group of friends took a walk to a resident nearby. We stayed there for close to four hours and during this period incoming calls had it that the protest had escalated to a violent one. Another had it that the school was being burnt and another had it that some students were being killed. With doubt we decided to go see for ourselves.
On reaching school premises i believed that the gists were not rumours. The students had burnt the vice chancellor's office, anarchy everywhere, students running helter skelter, some packing their boxes and taking off. I got to the hostel where i heard the most shocking news.
Kersy is dead,he was killed by a stray bullet i heard one of his roommates say.
It was hard to believe. I still had doubts and wanted to believe it wasn't true, i pulled out my phone dialled his number again several times, i rang but no answer. I went with some of my other friends to see his body, but was told he was taken away.
What hurt me most was we never saw or spoke that day. I wished i could have reached you to warn you of the impending danger. Wish i could have reached you to tell you to make sure you stay clear of school area that it was not safe. You were bold and vibrant, there was no dull moment with you. You inspired me a great deal.
Now all i have is the memories of the moments we shared together. I miss you. I know you miss him too @mritsnobigdeal
R.I.P. Brother. Till we meet to part no more
