The riddle is a formula (usually a folk creation in verses) that translates, in metaphorical form, some specific traits of a being, of a thing, of a phenomenon, etc., asking them to be identified by logical associations.
"It's 3 o'clock in the morning, you sleep, and you hear the doorbell. Your parents are coming for a surprise breakfast. You have just strawberry jam, honey and cheese. What do you open for the first time?"
