What hula hoop tells you about life

in #life8 years ago (edited)

There are some basic things in life that we learn at the young age: how to walk, how to talk, how to read and count, how to play all those popular games of our childhood, including hula hoop (spinning a large hoop around the body by moving the hips).

And the truth is, I probably was an extraordinary kid. A very very very extraordinary kid, because watching other children spinning that hoop around their bodies without any effort for hours seemed like a greatest mystery to me. A kind of mystery where scientists of the whole world should dedicate their energy to solve this riddle. HOW, was the only question that used to come to my mind when watching those kids. Actually, there was another question that like a little monkey was hopping through my brain from time to time: What is wrong with me? But this question was left aside, hoping that the little monkey would go away to search his banana somewhere else.

And so I grew up without knowing how to hula hoop. Big tragedy. Life without being able to do it is pretty simple - you just don't tell anyone that you don't know how to hula hoop. In any circumstances, ever. And so the days peacefully went by... until last week.

I went to the gym. My trainer was telling me all those things about how I am incredibly strong woman and I was sinking in my pride, happiness and sunshine. I was doing all the exercises without any bigger trouble and life was wonderful. And then it happened. The trainer left for a second and came back with this huge round hoop in his hands. And of course, on the top of the hoop was sitting that little monkey with a banana in his mouth. And he was smiling at me.

I tried my best to spin that hoop around my body longer than half a second but it didn’t listen to me. No matter what I did it kept falling down. The little monkey was rolling on the ground from laughter. Actually, I’m pretty sure that he was rolling on his banana which fell from his mouth. The trainer was laughing too, just in a more subtle way. After several minutes of my misery he just walked away with that subtle smile. “You will make it after some time”, - he also said. The little monkey didn’t believe it. And I looked pretty much like this:

The next day I came back to the gym. I told myself that I wouldn’t leave until that hoop is spinning around my body. I tried and tried and tried. It fell and fell and fell. The more it fell, the more I tried. It took me 48 times to pick that hoop up and try again. I’ve counted. And finally, the minute of glory – I managed to spin that hoop for the first whole minute in my life. The little monkey chocked with his banana.

In the evening of that day my hips were covered in bruises. It hurt really bad. But in spite of this, tomorrow’s morning I was standing at the gym trying to spin that hoop longer than that glorious minute. And I did it. The little monkey ran away. And I can hula hoop now for hours.

SO WHAT HULA HOOP TELLS YOU ABOUT LIFE?

That everyone have different hoops in their lives. Each of us faces small or huge challenges, failures, fears or misfortunes. We all have our own monkey with a banana.

My hula hoop tells you the simplest secret of life - no matter what, you need to keep trying. Try hard, do the best you can. Fall, struggle, fail, get up and try again. Everyone has different hoops in their life. But in any circumstances you have to pick it up and overcome it. On your way to victory you may get bruise and it may hurt. But you need to do the best you can and keep going. Don’t settle, don’t give up. The Universe always falls in love with a tough heart. Do your best and it will definitely fall in love with you.

Here I am on the day of my little hula hoop victory. And I am ready for the next, bigger one.

Just keep going!
