DevTalk meetups every thursday in my hometown

in #life2 months ago

Yesterday we had our third straight meetup we like to call devtalk. The devtalks are meetups we usually have at a local Starbucks and spend all our social battery talking about work, opportunities, new languages, technical bugs as well as just improving our english skills.

Language skills

Since I am in Mexico, english is something not everyone have and even thought we all know we should learn, not everyone has make up their mind to give it a serious shot. They either waiting on them catching it eventually or making the time to sign up to a class.

I made it my mission to not just help with the english issue, but also make them try AI to learn english. There are many multiple AI apps that have surfaced in the past months and me, being a learner of languages (currently learning Japanese). I recommend using at least a few.

One that I pushed for a while is Google Speak, which is free and you can use it on Chrome and Android at speak.google.com

One that has finally got some feedback last night was Praktika, an app which an AI avatar establish a conversation with the user and give instant feedback on what he/she should be saying.

The app is freemium but is so limited you really want to pay the 25 bucks for 3 months and try it out for real. The feedback is quite useful and I think that a lot of people will find it helpful just as Barrilito (one of the members) did.

Job hunting skills

One thing we share is our experience getting remote jobs and preparing for an interview. Of course english is a huge handicap which can bring people's salary to a big difference in lifestyle.

But also knowing where to look for these kind of jobs as there are many sites listing high paying jobs. With a group as developed as ours with years of coding, we are very qualified if it wasn't for the language barrier.

At the moment most people are enjoying the company and the overall knowledge of the group. It also helps for problem solving issues such as what to do with things happening with our code, or ugly code, or issues with our continuous integration strategy.

Sometimes we have students which also give us an insight on why we need more padawans in the ecosystem as we really need the next wave of developers to come along. Onboarding strategies is a recurrent talk on our group. I want to use AI and video production to push our Devtalks and have more users come and join us.

I have introduce the group to an X space called The Hunt to get a job in tech and how those mentorship can help you land a well payed job.

One thing I most add is that getting a job in the US as a senior will get you around 80-120k a year while locally you will be lucky to get as much as 40k a year. So having those jobs will help your lifestyle by a mile.

Money management

Although not as popular as not many have my experience with finance and money. Setting them in route to look for strategies on managing their money and looking into strategies which can allow you to either build a business, investments or credit leverage, not to mention DeFi and Crypto altogether.

I constantly upload and share content related with money management schemes as well as asset protection advice. Hopefully one day, it would be useful to them.

At this level, I know most of the conversation are more about cloud, components, and python libraries, which I am totally fine. Just want them to become a force that is rich and pays others to become themselves as opposed to just be employees.

Traveling and residence

Finally another thing I have been pushing is for them to become expats, and or at least do international traveling to connect with people and potential business partners in Canada, Europe or the US.

This will help them understand that their world is far more real than what this sad reality shows people. Lots of contests, companies and overall ecosystem to take advantage and enjoy. Is just a matter to take the steps.
