Numbers

There are 70 steps up the stairs to my apartment
There are 70 steps down the stairs from my apartment
I walk about 7 km/h
I bike about 16 km/h
I swim about 1,8 km/h
I need 8 hours of sleep
I have a hard time going to bed before 12pm
I have a hard time getting up before 8am
I get hungry at 9-9.30am
I am 183 cm high
I weigh 80 kg
My teapot can contain 1.1 litre

Daily intake of calories, number of books, Carbon footprint, hours spent playing video games, average running speed, BMI, current prize of Bitcoins... I haven't got a clue.

One year ago I mainly knew that I had to sleep 8 hours and that I was 183 cm in height. I also knew my age and the price of Bitcoins! Seems the older I get the more numbers I accumulate!

Are there many numbers in your life?

Sort:

Number 9

This is for you and @shortcut -- sound collage

Number 9 fascinates me, one example:
Take any number and multiply it by 9

9x9=81 (8 + 1 = 9)
8x9=72 (7 + 2 = 9)
22x9=198 (9 is there 1 plus 8 makes another 9)
33x9=297 (9 is there 2 plus 7 ...)
But there is much more to nine than this little example.

My wife loves 9 for exactly that reason. It is magic!

There's also something magic about the pop carpenter Lennon trying to make avant garde. Somehow the piece has so much simple musicality in it.

It's great.

I like your numbers post. It sort of goes along with my new #steemitletter. A quick line dropped off to let us know what is up.

My numbers go like this
up at 6am
bed by 1130 pm
food at 2pm
studio/work from 7-2
unplug 5-?

I will immediately add the tag to this post.

Oh you are so kind. Yay, #steemitletter in the post! :)

I quite like numbers and tend to quantify various aspects of my life. I run at 10 km/h. I'm in bed by 10:30 most nights, but then I have to be up at 6:30 for work. I'm taller than you and a little lighter

It's new to me :) I have to get up at 6:30 too because of my children, so I kind of lacks sleep in general. Sometimes maybe every ten days I just crash at 8:30 in the evening - that makes up for some of the time.

It is also clear that my walking pace is close to running :) The whole family is walking like that, and when my daughters were small they had to run when the rest of us strolled.

Not in my daily life that I am normally aware of, no, but many when I am mucking about with electronics. I do know a fair few decimals of π and e by heart, there is that.

I weigh x kg and I am y cm tall, and 3x2 - 2xy + 8280 = 0.

Sounds just like me in the old days... No end to how many numbers I know by heart when it comes to technical, historical, geographical and other topics that is not related to my own life (except that I know them).

The old days? But you're young! You have old days? We couldn't even afford old days!

I was lucky to inherit a whole bunch of those from my Grandfather!

Speaking of numbers and inheritances; do you remember the name of the account that made a $300 donation to us? It was something.support or some such.

No, something.support is probably closer than I would get. Can't remember, sorry.

It wasn't close either; it was @anonymous.donor 8-). Just remembered it.

At one point in the early noughties I was an avid Everquest player. I discovered after years of playing a command line that showed me how many real days of playing I had wasted of my life. It was 153 days.

At that point I didn't play again. That's almost half a year 24/7 of no progress and escapism. That was a significant number to me. I make a point now of refusing to play any game that has no end.

That is a number to render all other numbers superfluous. From now on I will only play NeverQuest or ExtremelyLimitedQuest.

As an engineer / inventor / constructor, numbers are my world.

This stupid english language that doesn't have its words ordered and numbered is really stupid and annoying. It is quiet difficult on me.

My memory holds lots of numbers. My memory fails with words.

So, the only real question is how long does it take while riding your bike down the 70 steps from your apartment?

I suppose it could be done in 10 seconds per floor including some fumbling when getting around. 50 seconds +10% overhead: 55 seconds

... or maybe a couple of days if it includes a small visit to intensive care at the hospital.

I knew a Malaysian living in Beijing on the 22nd floor in an apartment building where the lift was off after 23:00 every day. He was often coming home after 23, and he was super healthy, outran everyone when we were climbing the great wall

In the film Barefoot in the Park a couple moves in on the fifth floor (like me) and the elevator don't work... and then this happens:

In the French translation to keep this recurring joke real, they moved them up 10 floors as most people in Paris had to travail 5 floors every day.

Meanwhile in Beijing...

I happened to be very obsessed with numbers back in the days.
I guess, it started with Illuminati's numbers 23 and 5.

After I found out, that Pythagoras also was a numerologist, I've read a lot books about that topic.

I also was very interested in Pi (The movie is great). My daughter was born at Pi-Day (3/14) and I coincidentally wore my Pi-Shirt during her birth.

Lately I became obsessed with Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio. You might want to check out this video about a Fibonacci song by the band 'Tool':
