Prey in the Night -- Steemit School 100 Days of Poetry Challenge {DAY 7}

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Do you have those super scary dreams you are being chased? Usually, you're in a forest, trying to weave through the maze of nature without being caught. I recently had one of these dreams, and they are not fun.I wake up with increased anxiety and just don't feel ready to take on the day...

Prey in the Night

In the dark of night
I am seen as his prey
Terrified, being chased
Through a pitch black forest

Trees dotting my path
Sharp branches and knobby roots
Careful, or I'll fall
And be claimed by my predator

Coming to a clearing
The woods open up
The moon shines like a diamond
Lighting my journey

There's a cliff ahead
An abrupt end to the ground
My fear escalates
Energy coursing through my veins

I try to scream for help
But nothing than a whisper
Erupts from my lips
My pleas cannot be heard

And then I'm falling
Plummeting toward the earth
No help in sight
Yet I never land

Is it just me, or are these dreams always SO weird?!?!

The rhythm and cadence of this poem were a perfect match for the subject. I found myself running with you towards the cliff. Excellent poem!

Yes, as @papacrusher noted, a good rhythm here kept the frantic feeling through the piece, as well did the lack of imagery outside of the immediate give the reader less of a chance to experience anything outside of a panicked eye.

and, no worries, you're not alone in having those dreams, @keciah. thank you for sharing.

What a lovely poem even though it's dark (maybe because it's dark). I don't usually have scary dreams, thank goodness!
