Boost your productivity with these 6 simple tricks

in #life7 years ago (edited)

There is literally a hundred better, far more productive things you could be doing right now, instead of scrolling that endless Facebook feed. But it’s easier said than done. What you need are some practical tips on how to get rid of all the distractions and do something useful with your time, be it getting some work done, or finally finish writing that essay that’s been on your mind.

#1 Get rid of Facebook …

Don’t worry, I am not saying you should delete your Facebook account altogether [although this also has its benefits]. Simply remove the Facebook app from your phone. In fact, you will be better off deleting any app that is taking up too much of your time and not assisting you in a meaningful way. In my experience this gets the job done. There is no better way to stay focused that eliminating the opportunity for distraction.

#2 Don’t work too much

Having a good beak is good for you! I cannot stress that enough. There is no point in “working” your ass off 7 days a week. As I see it, there are two problems with trying that. First, if you manage to really work all the time without any distractions, to put it crudely, you’ll fry your brain. There’s absolutely no way you can keep up that lifestyle. Instead, allow yourself some breaks and get some good rest. That will give you some fresh look on things and boost your productivity.

Secondly, we are simply not wired with a large attention span. With that said, forcing yourself to work for hours just won’t yield the best results. To avoid that simply plan small breaks in between tasks. This leads us to number 3.

#3 Plan and plan again

What I find best is using my Google Calendar. Reminders, events, specific tasks, you can put pretty much everything in there, including breaks. It allows you to efficiently plan your day ahead, plus — you get a neat desktop notifications feature that lets you know what’s next.

#4 Set small goals

There is absolutely no point in setting unachievable goals for the day. Instead, break up your tasks into small chunks. That way you’ll be satisfied with yourself when you tick off each task and get some extra motivation to keep the momentum going.

NB: Remember to take short breaks in between tasks.

#5 Meetings just don’t work

Whether it’s a meeting at work or getting together with your study group, meeting just won’t get the job done. Speaking from experience, these are huge time wastes. If a meeting at work is unavoidable, make an agenda, more importantly — stick to it, and keep the meeting short: an hour tops. ANything longer is wasted time.

#6 The issue of multitasking

Want a great quote to live by?

“Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing instead.”

Truth is, multitasking is an enemy of productivity. You may think you’re doing great, but in reality, you’re not! If you want to give your best, focus solely on one task at a time. Otherwise, you’re bound to miss out on something important which you will regret later.

Sort:

I liked this post. I find this is exactly how I'm most productive too. I tend to look at work as a whole rather than small, modular components. I tend to get a little stressed out when trying to start working because of this. If you make things small and manageable, then everything becomes easy!

“Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing instead.”

Great quote.
