Hey Steemit!
Halloween is around the corner and most of us celebrating this fun holiday are getting our costumes ready. This is already my third Halloween in the US, but it will only be my second time dressing up. Last year I went to Youmacon as Tomb Raider (the older one, or the classic Lara, if you please) it was fun and I am super excited for this year too.
Initially, I wanted to go as quiet from Metal Gear solid 5, but since it is going to be cold in November over here in Detroit, I thought it would be a good idea to have my character put some more clothes on. This is how the idea of dressing up as a splicer from Bioshock came to life. I've been a long time fan of the series, turns out this year of 2017 makes it the 10th anniversary since Bioshock 1 came out, what a coincidence, right?
Alright, let's get ready for the ball, shall we?
I decided to go with a rabbit mask because I think it is the coolest looking one, even though I do love cats and usually I would pick something cat related in one way or another, I feel like the rabbit is better though haha.
So this is what I am going to try to recreate and share some tips with y'all.
If you were thinking of getting a rabbit splicer mask on Etsy or elsewhere, you probably noticed that those cost like $100 + for a painted one, and it is pretty expensive if you ask me. So I recommend you get an unpainted mask online, kind of like this one. I got it off of Etsy for $43, you can also buy it on Amazon or Ebay.
It is a 3D printed one, made of plain plastic.
Here are some basic things you are going to need to paint it, some stuff is actually missing from this picture, like a clear gloss spray, a sponge to smudge the paint around some, I will however guide through everything I did.
I didn't have a golden paint unfortunately, so I mixed golden powder and silver paint.
1.Get your mask and rub off any imperfections it may have with some sand paper.
2.If you want to have your mask have some sort of damage, like a bullet hole and knife stabs whatever, apply those at this time. To make a bullet hole, I used a regular nail and then a screw to make it wider, and I finished it off with a pair of scissors, making it look rounded and nice.
3.Add a thing layer of white acrylic paint or spray paint to the mask, when it dries, add a layer of golden paint. With a small sponge try smudging the paint, making the mask look old in a way, sort of weathered. I have applied quite a few layers of both white and golden acrylic paint, rubbing it in when the paint was still a little wet until I got the look I was happy with.
4.If you're going for the chipped paint effect, or wanna make some cracks, break off pieces of the mask to make it look like your splicer fought a lot haha, you may want to add these details at this point. I haven't had any supplies to make my mask look that vintage, so I drew some wrinkles with a pencil and stabbed it with a knife some.
5.Darken up the desired areas of your mask with some gold paint or glitter. I used oil markers for the edges of the mask and face art.
6.Add some blood. The red paint I had was actually too bright to look more like blood, so I mixed it with a tiny bit of black paint to achieve the darker color and make it look more real. I was pretty happy with the way the bullet wouldn turned out. You can also add some blood splatter and whatnot, get creative.
7.Once you're done creating your perfect splicer face, spray paint the entire mask with clear gloss coat like Krylon or Rustoleum, let the mask dry completely. Attach the string.
I think it turned out pretty decent and quite close to the original mask in the game, duhhh it was 3D printed you'd say haha, actually painting a mask it not as easy as it may seem, it took me about 3 days to finish mine, and I can't wait to wear it!
Hope you guys have a great weekend ahead, see you soon!
Also, if anyone would be interested in buying this off of me, it will be available for sale in mid November for only $75 + $15 domestic shipping (US only).
That is awesome! Such a cool costume idea - plus, I bet there won't be too many other rabbit splicers out. ;) Hubby used to play a lot of Bioshock, and I totally love the aesthetic of the game. You did such a great job making this mask your own. The bullet hole is an awesome touch. I hope you make a post with the complete costume later!
Thank you! I love those games, except the part 2, I didn't really like that one haha. I heard that zappl may possibly announce a Halloween costume contest, so this is why I am holding the whole thing back for now in case there is gonna be a contest haha, if not, I'll post it anyways hahaha
Awesome and creative, happy halloween...

Wonderful costumes for Halloween.
wow that's an amazing D.I.Y thanks for sharing this beautiful post amazing it looks :D
Thanks, lady!
That came out great! Your drawn crack details look fantastic. Do you know if the mask is printed in PLA or ABS? I ask because another "weathering" method would be to to heat up a nail or other sharp metal implement and use it to melt holes and make cracks and scratches that wouldn't be as clean. PLA has a pretty low melting point so you wouldn't need to get something too hot for it to work. Definitely experiment with that though before going whole hog. ;)
I'm just thinking out loud though. Honestly your paint work came out exceptionally good!
I think it is PLA? It feels just like plain plastic anyway, it was made nicely though. Thank you for the tip :)
Nice
Wow so you are not only
Good at cooking you also know how to paint ! This mask looks really cool 😎
Thank you! Yeah, I took a break from cooking and painted a mask for once hahaha. Gotta get ready for Halloween!
Hehehe I think Halloween is really cool. I actually celebrated it a bit when I was a kid in Sweden. Some people didn't understand what it was and didn't open the door hehe
It's cool that other people did share the candy. It doesn't exist in the same manner in Ukraine/Russia either, but people may dress up and attend a party sometimes haha
Yea I think it's similar to Sweden as well. However it seems like this holiday is becoming more and more popular
