One of my school friends Natalia has been living in New Zealand for about 10 years now, and last time I saw her in person was in 2014 or 2013, I'd say? Do not remember.
Anyway, this summer she and her husband were visiting Crimea, and we were supposed to meet up again, unfortunately, it didn't happen, bad timing. However, she was nice enough to send me something back, some little treats from Moscow that she got while staying there.
Let's take a closer look.
There is a bag, chocolate and a couple magnets. I still need to do the chocolate tasting to tell you how good or bad it was though. Don't feel like eating some right now haha, it is a huge block!
Next on the list.
A Nikita Khrushchev and Vladimir Putin magnet. If you can speak Russian you get the joke. Basically it talks about Khrushchev giving Crimea away or joining it with Ukrainian SSR (if you please) without consulting the people and Putin taking it back. You can read more about it here if you'd like.
The final lot.
Here we have 2 tiny chocolates and another magnet. This one is of GUM - the main
department store of the country or what we call them here in America a mall.
A little bit of history from Wikipedia:
Catherine II of Russia commissioned Giacomo Quarenghi, a Neoclassical architect from Italy, to design a huge trade center along the east side of Red Square. The existing structure was built to replace the previous trading rows that had been designed by Joseph Bove after the 1812 Fire of Moscow.
By the time of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the building contained some 1,200 stores. After the Revolution, the GUM was nationalized.
After reopening as a department store in 1953, the GUM became one of the few stores in the Soviet Union that did not have shortages of consumer goods, and the queues of shoppers were long, often extending entirely across Red Square.
At the end of the Soviet era, GUM was partially, then fully privatized. As a private shopping mall, it was renamed in such a fashion that it could maintain its old abbreviation and thus still be called GUM. However, the first word Gosudarstvennyi ('state') has been replaced with Glavnyi ('main'), so that GUM is now an abbreviation for "Main Universal Store".
Well, hopefully this gives you guys an idea about why it would be depicted on a magnet.

Malls in the US are so ugly! Look at that mall there! Wow. Also, that brick of chocolate wouldn't last long in my house. Moderation? What's that?
I haven't been to too many malls in the US, but I do agree they all look kinda the same haha. I love chocolate as well, but recently I had quite a lot of it haha
