Yeah that's strange. Maybe they were in the soil? Not sure how long you had the tank but it sounds like it's been a while - so that's probably unlikely. Maybe a new fish ate a bunch of snail eggs and regurgitated them into your tank upon arrival.

We haven't even had new fish for months. The only thing that happens in the last few days was a cleaning and a new filter. Unless someone in the house is playing a cunning trick!
