RE: Ask the Car Guy @socky April 1

Hi Socky, Thank you for such a useful post! There is a mysterious in my mom's car every time she makes a particular left turn. She begins the left turn and there is a dip in the road and then she accelerates to 35 mph. There is always the same mysterious sound. It is a single clear "pop" sound. She has taken her car to different mechanics to drive it in different places in town making left turns but none have been able to produce this "pop" sound. Some mechanics have thought perhaps it might be something about the airflow as she turns. We have removed everything from the truck of the car and nothing is shifting around making the sound. I hear the mysterious "pop" sound as well as my mother so I can promise that there is a real sound happening. She is afraid something might be coming loose and fall off her car someday while driving. Her car is a 2012 Nissan Sentra. Do you have any ideas/thoughts/guesses about this mysterious "pop" sound? Thanks!

Don't worry, nothing is going to fall off.

When turning and pop sound go together, the first thing I check are the CV joints. They are the joints on the drive shaft to the front wheels. You will have to inspect the boots on the CV joint for any cracks. sometimes they are hidden in the folds. If you have a cracked boot, then dirt and water could have gotten inside and caused the joint to go bad. Typically a bad CV joint will click during a turn and worse in a turn while on the throttle.

A single pop in while in a bump sounds like a strut is bad or a upper strut bearing is bad. Here is what the upper strut bearing looks like

Thank you for the very useful info, Socky! absolutely amazing!

I hope you can pinpoint the issue. I recommend a new mechanic. Most mechanics like to R&R parts because it is easy for them and that is where they make the money. Diagnosing noises are something they want to avoid.
