I think the reason is that prohibition of alcohol and cigarettes did not work, and when they were illegal, the government recieved no taxes, and the criminal element recieved all. They have very strict regulations and I think you must only use it at your home. In california, they use it casually, as they have very loose morals there. They do not represent the entire US, and it is better to be decriminalized and controlled, then the government recieves tax revenue, not the criminal, and theft and burglary are reduced, as the drug dealer are now out of business. There is difference between legalization and decriminalization.

I think what you are saying is very good, meaning the drug dealer will lose his job. But in the current prohibition context it is not a tax issue that puts forward, but the issue that marijuana is a drug and destructive type. there are different views on this. if it is true as you say it is the government's obligation to legalize and control its sales and use. so that distribution will be guaranteed.
