Daddy, what's this?

The little lady walked toward me holding a shiny silver disc out at arm's length. Suspicion was writ large on her five -year-old wise face.

I nodded and narrowed my eyes.

So the time I had been dreading had come. She had decided that now was the time to challenge me. Well, I might be a bit hungover but I would fight.

It was with a heavy heart that I readied myself to bludgeon her cruelly to the floor before she could get any nearer with her devil-discus weapon.

What does the writing say?

She held up her sickeningly sharp weapon and indeed, there was writing on one side.

I lowered the iron hand, saving her from the killing blow.

Oh, it says Adele.

Adele? What's that?

I made a small snickering noise. Like a radish caught in a jar.

It's a singer. Your mummy likes her.

The little lady turned the disc in her hand over and over.

I don't understand, what is this?

She thrust the silvery thing out at me.

I took it from her and put it down beside me.

It's a CD, lass. You know? A compact disc.

The little lady made a face like an old gnarled stick. I was obviously being shit at the explaining game. That's what hangovers do though. They make you a bit shit at parenting.

kgzhd4k_20181107122722605_20181108165735704_20181109165035600_20181111160230339_20181111180143048.jpg

But what's it for!?

It's a CD, a compact disc, it's got music on it.

What, music? What do you mean?

You put it in a cd player and it plays songs.

The little lady looked incredulous at such an idea then suspicious as if I was pulling her leg.

Show me!!

Her mouth was set in a grim line. It was patently obvious she wasn't going to believe any of daddy's nonsense stories.

Ah, we don't have a cd player anymore.

I shrugged my shoulders apologetically. It was the 21st century after all.

Are you teasing me, daddy?

No seriously, lass. We used to listen to music on CDs.

I didn't bother mentioning vinyl. The conversation was getting difficult enough.

kgzhd4k_20181107122722605_20181108165735704_20181109165035600_20181111160230339_20181111180356836.jpg

She looked unconvinced, thoughts raving through her head. Then her eyes lit up.

But music comes from Alexa, why would you need CDs?

By now my brain was struggling. It was a Sunday. I had been awake through the night with the little boom and then subsequently up since ten to five as this is his new dawn getting up time.

We didn't have Alexa back in the day lass.

No Alexa? But how did you listen to music?

I took a long and deep breath.

We listened to CDs because we didn't have Alexa or the internet.

The little lady got up and exasperatedly shook her head.

No internet and no Alexa? Oh very funny, Daddy. I'm going to tell Mummy you keep teasing me today, it's not funny

She stomped off.

It was my turn to shake my head. A world without Alexa and the internet? Whoever could imagine such horror??

Sort:

You should show her a walkman next with a tape cassette and a biro to wind it up!

That would look like something from the middle ages to her!!

First off @meesterboom... the picture... very disturbing, I love it!

Second I have a 21 year old who totally appreciates vinyl and loves the sound of an old record player but will never understand the struggles of having a phone attached to the wall with an extremely long tangled cord hanging from it.

Oh man, I remember that too. So annoying. All my conversations were listened in to by my parents!

She'll be telling the same story in years to come!

Haha, I know, still astounded by it all!

Ah, the circle of life. My son once asked me... Hey Mom, What did you guys call those huge black CDs?

Now, even those are outdated. Thanks for making me feel old. I hope your hangover burns throughout the entire day!

Haha, huge black CDs! Love it! That's what I am going to call them! It's still burning!!

Ah... why would you post this incredible sexiness in No Nut November? Are you trying to cause failure for trillions of gamers?

Of course that is exactly what I am trying ;0D

So recognizable!!! I bought me a Sony walkman last year to listen to my old mixtapes :-) Next thing I know I have 5 teenagers in my house freaking out about this “way cool” device! Until they heard the sound quality, and that it only holds like 20 songs :-)

Yeah when they realise it doesn't hold all of the songs they are like meh!!

Indeed! :-)
Have you ever tried making them watch an old VHS movie? Now that's fun!!!
Dad, can you put it back in HD please???

Que? you? woman? Honey, you made me laugh😍!
These are the inventions of the era that have passed, I think one feels the same when our grandparents speak although at this time it is very different for so many things that they have invented.
I think that's how all children are now, with the technological world we are in.

Tu hija es muy graciosa! 😏😊😉

Glad you liked the picture!! Damn I am hot ;0D

You really look very attractive... I want to be a lesbian. 😂

I have that effect something's on the ladies ;0) lol!!

I developed a crush on that photo above @meesterboom

Hehe, disturbing and funny!

The plot twist 😀😀. Even I think of how hard life must've been without phones. I came before the mobile phone era though but I was too little to understand the implications before they came. The world is moving too fast!

It's moving at a rate of knots!! I wonder what the next ten years will bring!!

I'm sure AI will take over a lot of things, let's just wait and see.

Ssshh, perhaps it already has!!

@meesterboom hello dear friend, children can not believe that before essexistia the internet and all its environment, or you can name the Disco and much less to the magazine

Good lord, look at that device!!

Silly Daddy is so advanced that his computer no longer has a DVD player, or, he could have said the CD player was an early type of player, like this, and played the CD for the
Little Lady.
He would have been a hero then, and the Little Lady could have shown the Good Lady how smart she was.
Try explaining a party line on a wind-up telephone, or an icebox fridge, where the man brought a block of ice each week, or even hand start cars that you cranked to start them, no such thing as button, or, key start.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an ice box fridge!

It looked like a freezer on top of the fridge, there was a hose out the back to take the melted water away into a bucket from memory.
The man would bring the ice block and put it into the top part, and God help you if you left the bottom fridge door open.
I can remember Mum making home made ice cream in it so it must have been pretty cool.

Thats ingenious but at the same time I can imagine the joy of when it was no longer necessary

We changed houses, the next house had nothing like that there, there was a roughly 4-gallon kerosine tin sized frame, covered in butter cloth, the bottoms of which were in a container of water.
Placed on the South ( coldest) side of the house, the water evaporation helped keep it cool.
About a month later we got a real fridge, and Mum was happy again.

Ha!!! Last year Howie and I were in a department store and overheard a conversation of two tweens, one of them picked up a cassette tape and said "What's this?" THAT made me feel old, never mind kids not knowing what a CD is!

I know, I though CDs had a bit more life left in them!! I mean that's just mental!

I tried to explain the synergy between payphones and pagers to some kids once. They laughed at me and made me feel old. Jokes on them though. I fucked their mom.

Posted using Partiko iOS

That always gets em, that's why I hate it when their moms die

What's Alexa? And what's the internet?

It's better to live in innocence!!

I still have many Cassette with me :)

Then you rawk! :0)

RoFL XD I had to explain floppy disks to my oldest many years ago. They at least know what cds are because they've seen me burn a few previously and we still have dvds XD

I still have one in my ancient desktop which I burn CDs with for the car, only just realised I could have shown her that!

Hey! I still use CD's... I guess I am old.

Hehe, not old, just wise ;0)

This is like telling my kids in class we wrote letters, had no internet or 1000 channels on TV and they are shocked with a 'How did you survive'??? Very well thank you - we actually looked people in the eyes when we spoke to them....Love the pic - the blond hair brings out your eyes haha

Hehe, I am quite fond of the pic too!!

I wrote letters too, God, I will keep that one quiet

Yes you do not want to shock the little lady totally - but even thought technology is great in many ways and make live so much easier, those were great days

They absolutely were. I loved some of my old tech. Tapes and what not, AHH. A warm feeling thinking about them

In the near future, Alexa would be hailed as the woman who raised all these youngins. I pity those who make it to the inevitable apocalypse...

Alexa, turn on the lights

To which they would be met with no response. There is no Alexa. There is no electricity.

I truly get the feeling of both sides of the equation. It took me a while to wrap my head around the concept of vinyl when I was younger. Now, I'm explaining what cassette tapes and floppy discs are to my nieces and nephews. Before my explanation, they thought I had 3D printed the save icon! Strange times we live in!

It will be all 3d this and virtual blah blah that to them when they are older. I am laughing at the thought of them trying to explain it all to me and me going Eh, what do you mean, this is nonsense!!

There are just some things dear..... that you won't be able to understand until you area little older. .... or the ever popular, "I don't know, I believe you should ask your Mom.

I keep a portable CD/Cassette player.... just in case.

I should get one. I miss mine but it broke and I couldn't be bothered with the expense!

Hahahaha. And that's what children are for: to make us feel old and inept

They do it ever so well!

To me, it just confirms that children know fuck all.

So true, need taught. With a cane!

With the Internet as ubiquitous as water, it was no wonder that the little lady would not believe what you were saying. I remembered my days when the Internet was slow as hell using dial-ups modem. She must be thankful she is born in this era. Upvoted!

I think we are so thankful for the era we are born in!

It is weird as it was just like the other day we had CD's and Blue Ray. Curious to see what will be next.

I was thinking the same because I realised I haven't played a Blu-ray in donkeys!

You will get your revenge when they try to explain cryptocurrency to their kids.

Revenge is best served years later.

!tip

Ha, you might very well have a point there!

Oh, my!! To be a fly on your wall. There isn't enough money in the world to buy that!!! ;)

I don't know if there is enough people mad enough to want it :0D

Haha, oml that is funny. I bet there are so many parents who are going through this explaining thing, about what cd's are and how the heck did we have music. Don't tell her about not having video games, or you will be in for a whopper. Dang them dreaded hangovers. :)

Oh man, I forgot about the video games thing!!

Lol, that's ok. Your secret is safe here. Heck, I still have movies in VHS, and music on cassette tapes. I'm sure by the time they are to our ages, things will change once again. Now I am curious if/when TV's will be voice controlled and remotes will be non existent.

My TV is voice controlled almost, the Amazon fire bit anyway!

Lol, ahh so it has hit you, this new trend. :)

Children don't cry anymore because they fall off bicycles and hurt themselves...they cry because the wifi is down...how terrible is that?

Oh man, the railing when the WiFi is down is terrible!! Mostly from me ;0)

I'm the same...I cry and cry and cry...I get like wifi-rage!!

So do I, them I get the rage more when I try to fix it
