You are inspired and pay close attention to this particular more senior and experienced leader of a department.
It seems what he or she says are so true. His or her words linger in your mind and you ponder upon it the whole day, even when you get home from work.
If this is happening, a potential mentor has presented in your life.
The norm is, we get inspired everywhere, but the next questions lies on which of them is going to be the right one for you?
I will first start with yourself. You have to first identify what motivates you, and what are your specific goals that you want to achieve. We have to do a self analysis, find out what is lacking in us.
For a start, a great mentor plants seeds in you. This is particularly applicable when you get motivated by words from him or her. A mentor sometimes brings out the awareness of what exactly is lacking or what exactly interests you. It is often what gets your attention.
I personally find a mentor in-still values about life that we can relate to, that we have experienced. When I come from a family of parents who didn't get to complete primary education, and from grandparents who were farmers selling vegetables by the road, I am drawn to mentor who gives words of wisdom in values of hardship, of breakthroughs, of finding your niche, of standing on your beliefs.
A mentor can be your direct superior at work, or someone who has no working relationship with you but you find words of wisdom from him or her.
Another aspect is to be aware of the life experience of the mentor. A growing mentor mentors different mentee according to phases of his or her own life.
So here it is, identify the mentor that has been through your phase of life, with thoughts and words that is applicable to what you are experiencing , and motivates you to breakthrough more and more barriers of understanding and learning.
(As I am writing this, the movie moments of Jackie Chan’s Drunkard Master discipling him and forcing him to practice his kung-fu is floating in my head… I am definitely more familiar with Drunkard Master than the Jedi and Apprentices… :)… )
And lastly, identify a mentor who cares about your progress. Mentors may not say much (I personally am drawn to mentor like this), but they constantly check on your progress and continues to give you advice on how to move to the next phase.
In other words, find a mentor that is sincere about mentoring you and one who works along with you in guiding you to your fullest potential at each phase and achieving your goals.
Keep your eyes, ears and heart opened to identify your mentor, and identify the right one who brings out the better of who you know you are.
