Time and again I find myself talking to the animals, sometimes singing their song. Yes, each has their own song based on my perceived vision of who they are and it makes me happy so I sing their song. No I am not a crazy lady!
After moving from big city to a rural life 12 years ago the sounds of nature became more evident. Suddenly, the silence turned to songs as each chirp or ribit or rattling of the leaves caught my attention. What I began to hear was astounding. Bright red male Cardinals with their muted colored mates were singing loudly back and forth to each other as they darted about the property. We had a joke that no matter where we went the cardinals would find us. Ever notice that they are everywhere?
In the wee hours of the morning in late fall the Barred owls called to each other to begin their courting rituals. It sounds like "who who calls for you" and at other times their calls sound like monkeys. Just the weirdest call ever. What was I hearing? I actually thought there were monkeys out in the yard! In the early spring their young owlets could be heard calling for more food as they waited patiently in the nest for a morsel of dinner. We watched in awe as they grew into fluffy feathered puffs. Jumping from limb to limb before taking that leap of faith in flight. 🦉
The singing is sometimes unconscious. I seem to be most melodic when washing the dishes or cleaning up the house, yes even in the shower! It does seem rather coincidental that the poor boxer dog is having problems with her ears. One thing about all of my creatures is that they don't care much for loud rock and roll music. Perhaps the bass is too much for them. They each like their own song which pops into my head when they are with me. Anything from a little humming noise to a funny bellowing sound and each creature knows that I am talking to them in a special way.
The chickens have a language unto themselves where they cluck and murmur almost inaudible little sounds. Sweet notes they mutter cheerfully as go about their chore of cleaning up bugs and scratching at the earth. An owl hoots in the distance they get very quiet and listen for what may be the beating wings of a predator. They close into a little circle, protecting one another as one might from a strong gust of wind.
Our old cat Barney follows me anytime I venture out of doors. He tries to nibble on the chicken food when the girls get fed. He brushes against my legs as I sit gazing at their ever curious activities. My hand drops down to touch him automatically. No matter how far the walk he lopes along behind me. My guard cat. As I look for treasures in the fields he lays in a soft spot and watches me. I am never alone. Someone is forever watching over me. It is not a threatening feeling, like a noose around my neck but one of comfort and serenity. Glancing up I realize how far I have walked so we head back toward the house just me and Barney off to see what everyone else has been up to. Together. It's a good feeling.
We get back more than we can possibly give to each and every one of our critters because the only real language we have to speak is Love.
🐓🐓
Do you know the language of animals and do you talk to them?
Oh my. Thank you so much. This is so much more than I could have asked for or imagined.
Beautifully written. Your love shines through with every word.
I think I am now one of your pets if you will allow it.
We will have to plan a virtual Hen partay and they can speak chickinese and you can interpret for me, Okay?
Thank-you bchick! You are very welcome and so glad you liked my little story. There is always room for one more here at the "animal house."😉 I plan on doing a chickinese dictionary in the near future. I am certain you probably have heard your share of that lingo🐓
More and more, as Lee is teaching me. Her clucks and squawks, and what do you call that noise when they settle down to lay an egg?
Yesterday a groundhog somehow got into her run and she made a nervous pacing noise as it stood in the corner.
Or the sound she makes when she sees me coming and runs into the house to the nesting box that I lift to give her treats. Since it has never been used for its intended purpose I lift the top to talk to her and be close to her where we can meet face to face.
Oh yes, that could be a big thick book! Well, virtually speaking it could have lots of entries!
Oh dear bchick, I didn't even think about us going back and forth on siricocks comments. My bad. 🐓
I don't think I have noticed it before, people using the comments section for other conversations, but I bet this is why people use the IM things like Discord...to have conversations.
Thank you mother2chicks, I really enjoyed this post. I do a blog about Love and marriage if you would be interested. I am following you.
Will happily check out and follow you. Thanks for stopping by 🐓🐓 I see you are already being followed. Soon to be read.
Thanks hope, I've been following you since my first post back in May.
Thank you @mother2chicks, sorry I did not realize. Then I am glad I am also following you now. Remember to read the Love&marriage blogs. I did not post for two days. I am a bit under the weather, hope to post later today.
No problem. It was memorable to me because you welcomed me first to steemit. Was just touching base with you😇 Hope you feel better soon🐓
Really interesting, and I agree. Even better than to stop and smell the roses is to listen to animals and birds.
Thanks for reading and stopping by🐓
