Lemongrass Chamomile Soap

in #life7 years ago

Earlier in the year, I taught myself soap making skills. This was one of my first creations: a gentle skin-soothing chamomile and mint leaf soap. I made this soap loaf using the crock pot method. It turned a beautiful chartreuse/yellow color.

Soap is created by combining a lye and oils. The lye particles bind to the water and it results in the saponification process. This process is what makes soap safe to use as lye can cause some serious burns and damage to the skin in it's original form. As soap goes through its saponification process, it takes time to harden. This particular soap hardened over night and I was able to cut it the next morning.

I had used my stick blender to thoroughly mix a combination of melted olive, sweet almond and coconut oils and dried chamomile leaves. I also added a pinch of pureed mint leaves.

After I poured the mixture into the soap mold, it began to thicken and this was the texture of the soap.

I flattened the soap and added dried chamomile leaves. This soap cured for a total of 3 months and it was heavenly!
