Workforce training and development is one smart way smart entrepreneurs grow and sustain strong businesses. The importance of workforce training and certification cannot be over emphasized.
An entrepreneur that fails to train his/her workforce is planning to fail in business. It's only a matter of time before that business will implode. Amazingly, some people feel workforce training and development is a waste of resources that is capable of draining the company financially. The common argument they have is that employees may leave the company for another after acquiring certain training skills and/or certification. Hey! I think that's a wrong thinking. Infact, I consider such thinking as the mindset of a poor and stingy boss. "Poverty of the mind" if you ask me.
The only result this kind of mindset will give you is a failed business.
Yes, some employee may leave the organization after acquiring some new skills; but not all. As a matter of fact, what the company would gain from such employee before leaving is far much better and more valuable than the hazard the employee will pose if not trained.
An entrepreneur once said that
"The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay. "
Few years ago I met an entrepreneur whose business was thriving. However I noticed that the company had no training plan for the workforce. So, I had a discussion with her(the CEO) on the need to regularly train and develop her employees. She said "Nat, my fear is that after spending money on them they might quit working for me." The summary is that, today, that company that was once a shining light has folded up. No more! When I heared the news, I knew exactly what the problem was.
An untrained employee is a potential hazard to any business. If you want your business to grow and last long, then consciously invest in continuous training and development for your workforce. It's more like the GIGO theory ( Garbage In, Garbage Out).
"Make your employees feel valued by training them. The way your employees feel is the way your customers will feel. And if your employees don’t feel valued, neither will your customers" . — Sybil F. Stershic, marketing and organizational advisor
For your business, workforce training will:
~improve staff loyalty and retention because it demonstrates to them that you value them enough to invest in them.
~improve profit margin because employees will work safer and smarter.
~help you target skills that will meet the needs of your operations both on the immediate and long term.
~ improve customer satisfaction because your employee will feel more confident, and also improve operational safety and efficiency.
For your employees, workforce training will:
~Create a high sense of value
~Improve their contributions to the growth of the business
~Enhance growth within the company structure, which means better pay and condition of service for the employee.
So friends, don't get it twisted. Training your workforce will not kill your business, it will only make it stronger. It's called "smart work".
It is good for your business and good for your workforce.
