review doom 2016.jpg

Its been decades since doom first appeared on the scene changing the gaming world with its first person gameplay. Here it is almost 30 years later here is doom changing my world with its first person gameplay.
With games like destiny or halo among many others the first person genre got very stale for me. Last year my brother and I played Doom for our very first lets play! I have been wanting to play it ever since.

Back when I discovered emulation and shareware Doom was one of the first games I ever downloaded and played. I remember my friend adding a Simpsons doom MOD to the school computers. So I already knew what i was getting my self into! FAST DEMON SHOOTING ACTION!!! I have never played Wolfenstein and to be honest Duke Nukem always seemed greasy to me!

But Is this game worth your money and your time?

Story
The UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) was taken over by demons because of a greedy lady who wants unlimited energy for earth. This dude who died of brain cancer but now lives in a robot body wakes you up from your slumber and helps you to hell and back to F stuff up! As you can see story is not super incredible here but I still do not want to ruin it! Its still worth experiencing your self. I was a fan of the ending.

Design
This is where I got really into the game.
Id Software Executive producer said “Badass demons, big offing guns and moving really fast” are some of the principles of Doom. You definitely get that from the start. When I play Doom I get overwhelmed with feelings of bad ass! This game encourages you and makes you want to push forward. From beginning to end this game makes you feel very powerful. The base and hell levels fit the mood very well. You never feel out place. The unreal engine made this game look phenomenal. If you ever get the chance too stop and take a look at your surroundings you’ll see how detailed everything is.

Presentation
The game comes with a single player mode, online multiplayer and a map editor.
Online multiplayer is fast pace and has a leveling up system similar to COD. The tone also changes quite drastically. While the single player campaign feels very very old school with a new taste the multiplayer is something we see in new shooters. You are restricted to two weapons, you rely a lot on health and armor collectibles that are scattered around the map.

Snap map is the games level creator. One of the best parts is going through the different user created levels. Some are very creative and inventive some are made to recreate old school doom levels, its all powered by a user voting system. Sadly this was a feature that was missing from the recent Switch port.

Make sure you don’t skip the tutorial as it is fantastic.

Gameplay
Doom is a first person shooter that in my opinion borrows a lot from platformer games. Leaping from ledge to ledge and later the addition of a double hump. Glory kills are one of my favorite things found in Doom. When your enemy has taken enough damage you can hit them with a gruesome male attack that not only is animated well but it makes you feel like a total bad ass!

From the moment you start you move forward. You move from one part of the base to the other until you find a large area filled with health and power ups.
This is an indication that you are about to be attacked by the worst scum from hell. All you do is lure enemies to chase you… shoot them then look for any weak ones that are scattered around the pit. Many collectibles are all around the game so exploration is encouraged. The guns are of course part of what makes Doom so great! You get great selection of guns that can be upgraded in many ways. The weapons selection goes from your sexy super shot gun, to the incredible BFG 3. You also get rocket loungers, gatling guns, assault rifles if its powerful and worthy you will see it here but the addition that is worth mentioning is the Chainsaw!
It is pretty much a one hit kills!
It is so satisfying! I like it way more than the Gears of War chainsaw.

Sound
The sound design is one of my favorite things that stood out in this game! When you are ripping a demon in half it sounds so good. When you are shooting or in the depths of hell you feel there. I love when in the middle of exploring. Everything is quiet then you hear heavy guitars with dubstep synths you know its about to get real. I actually listen to the soundtrack all the time in my car! It gets me ready for the day!!

Final Words
Doom has to be one of my favorite games that released in 2016. Sadly i did not get to play it till the end of 2017. This game was so much fun to play I really cannot wait for the sequel. This game also helped me see first person shooters in a different light. This game makes me want to try games like metroid prime or bioshock. I have heard that Wolfenstein is amazing and really worth picking up. Bethesda knows what they are doing. Specially with the same player one campaign I really see me playing more bethesda and ID software games. With fun gameplay, simple story and high action

I give this game a gruesome.
4.5 Chainsawed demons out of 5.
