Human beings are by nature, tribal. Tribes protect individual differences among people. Culture, like a diamond is developed with time and experience. As carbon changes with pressure, so too, do resilient people. Over time, a pattern emerges and imprints on generation after generation of people who survive each life time and continue life forward. Each human is unique, no two are the same, and unfortunately some carry a mindset tuned into repeated suffering.
This is a plague in America. It is a disease which spreads like wildfire through icons and multi media. The movie Black Panther is being celebrated as a “black film.” When one emphasizes that Black Panther is a “black film,” the divide within the nation is furthered by taking the storyline out of context. The people of Wakanda celebrate their culture, their land, their integrity and intelligence.
Black Panther is being hailed as a progressive film for having an all black cast. But in a world where one can apply to become a citizen of another country without physically living there, there are more important things like owning one's life and taking personal responsibility than emphasizing the color of one's skin as an accomplishment. There is advantage to each skin color by playing into stereotypes for one's own gain and there is strength of character by being proud of and taking care of one's appearance. But idolizing a group of people because of the color of their skin and not the culture and accomplishment, one misses the whole point of life and drives his or her mind into a world falsely veiled by inequality and victim-hood.
Every person is equally given time to do what ever he or she wishes to do with. Empires are built because of vision and action, not because of money. Money is a tool. Similarly, money does not kill people because it is people who use the tool of money to acquire things to kill themselves and others with it.
Instead of furthering the double standard of hailing black power and calling white power racist, why not observe the accomplishments, strengths and weaknesses of each group and speak of these facts? Black Panther wields an all black cast not because the filmmakers are celebrating black skin, but because it is set on the continent of Africa, where most people are black. The same way that the cast of Thor is all white because it is a Nordic story, and not because the filmmakers are celebrating white skin.
Black Panther, like many of the media presented by Marvel Comics is another story told to exemplify the power each individual holds to bring about great change. Black Panther is a great movie because it teaches the story of success brought on by adherence to principle and uniting as a tribe.
One cannot miss the fashion of the people of Wakanda. The movie offered a fresh mix of traditional African culture down to neck rings and lip disks and up to suits infused with technology.
