Many have abused the word 'dependent'.
While others prefer independency, many just don't know which to choose.
But is anyone really independent?
Politics they say is power and life in general revolves around power. You can only earn and enjoy more when you have some level of power.
When I want something from you, then I am dependent on you. And if you do not need much from me, then you have power over me. This is power-dependency relationship.
But for the fact that you don't want anything from me, doesn't mean you're totally undependable? Could you survive being absolutely independent?
If yes is the answer you echoed above, then literally there is no wisdom in the saying "nobody is an island"
The basic form of dependency is demand-and-supply. One person wants something and another can supply it.
And yet no one could claim not to ever be in need of something he/she doesn't have.
I see alot of Nigerians and other Third World countries throwing shots at their leaders for obviously depending on developed countries to lead their nation.
Many say, "we can produce absolutely anything we want in Nigeria, why do we keep forming ally with developed countries."
Others say, "we are independent, yet we still depend on America and China for technologies. If so we are totally dependent and it's bad"
But that's not the truth. The truth is that everyone is dependent on someone. The world power decentralized in a way that everyone depends on each other to survive. No country could boast of living 100% within its borders. A few things still cross the border into America just the same way it enters Nigeria.
The truth is this, the world is decentralized in a way that only those who is social enough to leverage wisely and even has what to sell for convenient leveraging has some level of power over the others.
There is no equity, Yes!
There is no equality in the distribution of power and resources, Yes!
But those who leverage properly will always have more power than even those naturally graced with it.
If you want to increase your power, seek to increase dependency, either by increasing the level of need or by reducing the alternatives the person can choose. You can do this physically or through the elegance of your words.
No one is actually independent, those that appear powerful are on top of their DEPENENCY game. They leverage like no other. You just have to learn to co-exist even as you retain your integrity, uniqueness and power.
When you are dependent and find this to your disadvantage, then you may seek to increase the number of alternatives you can choose.
Dependency from a business or economic standpoint is reasonable.
But to depend on others for your own joy and happiness is irrational and plain foolishness.
Thanks for the beautiful piece.
Thanks.
Well I came from the view of power.
Dependency is power.
And if you wish to be powerful in any relationship, then you just have to leverage properly...
Thanks for your reaction
Very thought-provoking. I think it's more about interdependency. For example, in the UK, people discuss foreign aid as if it's all about charity. It's not. "Aid" smoothes the way for business/arms deals. The countries we give "aid" to often throw out the welcome mat for big British businesses, sometimes to the detriment of their own home-grown businesses. And some developed countries provide essential infrastructure "aid" for small island nations in return for fishing rights. That's interdependency (dressed up as charity).
