It's been almost a week since I joined Steemit. It's also been my sisters wedding week. She was married on Thursday.
So I've been doing all these unsexy wedding tasks, like preventing a collapsing wedding cake, and making a background for a photobooth with tissue paper fans, and picking up chocolate eclairs from the back of dodgy industrial kitchens with very angry looking chefs rolling their eyes at me. And pre-ordering breakfasts for the bridal party so nobody fucking faints on the day.
It's been true first world chaos.
On the morning of my sisters wedding, as I was attempting to glue these creepy spider leg lashes on my eyes, there was a knock on the side door of our old Queenslander (the name of old houses in Brisbane), and my sister ran out thinking it was a delivery that should of arrived several days prior, but never did.
Instead it was a package addressed to me, but bought by my boyfriend. Immediately my mind stumbled into Crypto-world, amongst all this, soon to be forgotten wedding bullshit. The Ledger Nano S was now sitting on my floor, narrowly avoiding the heels of the ridiculous but beautiful shoes I was wearing.
About a month ago my boyfriend had bought me and few other people in our life 'Hardware Wallets'. Why I wanted one of these was still sort of beyond me. But the day after the wedding as I sat in my boyfriends room, smelling and looking like the tragic drunk aunt who thrusts her way onto the dancefloor at the reception, I found out.
I started by researching the Ledger Nano S, and for the most part, I didn't understand what any of it meant. I got pretty quickly that the Ledger Nano S was a removable, portable device that allows you to store your various currencies relatively safely. The website uses jargon that I'm sure would impress and satisfy hard-ware geeks, but from what I could gather, it just meant that this thing was reliable, cleverly formatted and protected. I think most importantly, If you lose your device, there's a recovery sequence that can be employed (which is basically just a bunch of words on a piece of paper) and if you're anything like me, this is hugely comforting. There's a whole interesting process when it came to setting up my Ledger as well, but I'll leave that for my next post.
I think what stood out to me most when I was learning about this part of crypto was the quiet gratitude of something concrete. With my sisters wedding in full swing, ambiguity and stress was ruling my mental rhythm. But its de-esculation walked hand in hand with learning about this thing. Crypto among chaos, ledgers leading learning, and whatever other corny aliteration you can think of.
