How successful has steemit been for newcomers?

have newcomers been successful in building their steemit without a lone whale coming and upvoting them?

I just wonder if this platform is sustainable. I'm basically using it as a facebook/twitter replacement. It isn't bad for that.

I had the same thought this morning. After just joining steemit last week and posting a couple of articles I am lacking any feedback and feeling a little bit lost in this jungle here.

I'm still not sure how to promote myself honestly. I think maybe use tags where the most action is to build yourself up. Perhaps not write 800 words each post either, because your time may not be worth it
