In the origins of science, utilitarianism was not present. Very basic principles impelled the first thinkers to quench their thirst for knowledge: the innate human curiosity, the desire to know the intimate knowledge of the world and the aspiration to have a conceptual domain were the pillars to build the paths of knowledge. Those were the times of Philosophia, the love of wisdom.
That world had no greater mysteries. What was known was that within sight and that was enough. Nobody wanted more. Other types of explanations were not sought.
Of course those first thinkers made mistakes. Its main source of mistakes was the use of the senses as a tool of interpretation. From there the failures of minds like Ptolemy´s, who came to think that the earth was the center of the universe.
In our time it is hard for us to imagine that there was a time like that, where there was no intention of extracting any profit from the exercise of thinking.
The universe has become very strange to us. It has become immensely great, inscrutable, and uncertain. Consciousness before such infinity has made us consider our earth an insignificant point in the middle of the cosmos.
Until the times of Newton and Descartes, knowledge was maintained in that conception of knowing for the sake of knowing, of knowing only by the desire to do it.
With the twentieth century that way of thinking radically changed. The mastery of technique was imposed as a reason for science. All knowledge became instrumental. The human being was lost as the center of the production of knowledge. The knowledge was dehumanized and began to revert against its creators.
Today we have to live in the midst of a science alienated by the idolatry of technology. The insensitive mechanized hearts embrace without shame machines that produce destruction.
We bet with a magical mentality that the great savior will be the technique. But there is a question: How will the cause of the problem be at the same time the reason for the solution?
The dazzling forces us to continue wandering on circular paths.
We will read each others again.
