Hi Steemians! This morning I watched a very interesting show about the electronic cigarette or "E-cig" on french TV. Here is an interesting summary.
Let's agree, I'm not a doctor, I don't encourage anyone to smoke and I'm only sharing my opinion on this product. The specialists already don't agree with each other, I'm not going to add more to that! ;)

There are many questions about its hazard and is purpose. Is this really helping smokers? Will the electronic cigarette attract new youth who don't smoke classic cigarettes? What is the danger in using the products ?
Whatmakes up these products?
Propylene glycol is not a carcinogen, it's widely used in the diet and in medicines to dehydrate.
Vegetable glycerin is an innocuous product that is used to transport aromas also used in medicines and foodstuffs.
The food flavorings are non-carcinogenic when heated according to the studies but there is no real research ever yet conducted about the effect when this product is inhales. The studies present its reassuring but there is no scientific evidence of their safety by inhalation, for this reason, remain vigilant!
Nicotine is irritating and addictive, it causes addiction but doesn't give cancer. The nicotine present in e-cigarettes is the same as that used in the patch or chewingum that are used to stop smoking.
They may say what they want, when I see this logo I tend to be wary!
It's the smoke of burnt tobacco (and all its harmful ingredients) that gives cancer
It is of course always better to inhale nothing than to inhale an electronic cigarette. But by cons if you are already smoker it's really better to take an e-cigarette rather than a conventional cigarette. If you want to get out of smoking, you need YOUR decision the electronic cigarette is a momentary help. It's a transition towards a definitive stop
The e-cigarette is a product made for smokers, which serves to gradually decrease their consumption and should not, under any circumstances be a product that serves to encourage someone into smoking. This is one of the problems pointed at, young people try a new product to have fun saying that it is not dangerous.
Have you ever noticed the cloud of smoke coming out of an e-cigarette, I've seen people smoke next to a child in their car. This is a dangerous behavior whatever the cigarette is electronic or not...
And what about advertising ?? This is the current debate in France. The pneumologists are for advertising e-cigarettes because according to them this one is a help to stop smoking. The opposition claims that advertising encourages young people to start smoking.
I find the products getting more and more designed and targeting the young. Would the manufacturers try to attract new customers?
The risks of inhaling the smoke coming out of e-cigarettes are controversial, with some experts saying that concerns about the risk of smoking E-cigs leading to traditional cigarettes are not well founded.

I would go for no advertisement on any kind of cigarette. I think we need to make the packaging and objects themselves as unattractive as possible. I'm happy that cigarette packages now have to contain health warnings and hope this trend continues.
We should also put more emphasis on how disgusting it is to the people around you. How unattractive it is. This might make more of an impression on kids.
Thanks for this reply @playfulfoodie ;) Soon in my country packets will all of the same color without distinctive mark but always with health warnings. Now they are disgusting pictures on the both sides of the packet showing lungs and heart in poor condition or during surgical intervention.
I can only applaud that. I really hate cigarette smoke. It's disgusting and it just seems so unfair to me. I care about my health, so I take good care of myself. Then someone comes along to stand next to me and blows their smoke into my face.
Living healthy is a personal choice, so is living unhealthy. I don't appreciate people choosing for me.
"The freedom of some stops where others begin." Unfortunately smoke does not know this adage (and many people either)
I don't support this. i believe this is ban in my country but cigarettes are allowed. Perhaps too much revenue for the government at stake.
Yes, I do think you're right about the revenue for the government.
I am still smoking good old cigarettes. I role them myselft wit american spirit tabaco and actived carbon filters 6 mm size ;-)
I have in mind to quit at one point smoking ;-)

Thank you for this post, very informative! I don’t smoke anything – and never have – and I think it’s the best course of action for me. I’d like to keep it this way in the future.

I don't smoke any kind of cigars and I don't encourage anyone to smoke, but that's just me .
It's not smoke, its actually vapor, and not it's not that dangerous even for children. The fact that someone is giving and bad example to a kid is a different topic.

A good and necessary discussion. I see the dangers in appealing to children/what other harms the flavoring could have (such as COPD). However, I do see a major possibility that the power of E-cigs to drastically decrease mortality in people who already smoke. To me it seems common sense how much safer e-cigs are than conventional type. It would be a shame to see these banned when it has a potential to increase health. However, proper education on nicotine addiction must be at forefront.
Thank you for this thoughtful comment. It's certain education plays an important role as well as prevention about smoking. There is plenty of money in games and lobbies must exert enormous pressure on the manufacturers of e-cigs. If it can help people to stop smoking there is no reason to prohibit it
