If you have ever wanted to surf, why not learn now?
Surfing if a wonderful way to spend a morning. It doesn't take very long to learn and it will keep you fit and in shape!
Step 1: Pick a surf board
Many beginners make the mistake of buying a small surfboard as their first board. Having a small board as a beginner surfer will make you hate surfing. You won't have the buoyancy to catch a wave and you will not be able to stand up if you manage to somehow catch one! Therefore your best best is to get a second hand board, over 7 feet long. If you have the money to buy a new board go for it however a beginner surfer won't be able to tell the difference anyway so you may as well save your money.
Step 2: Pick a surf spot
As a beginner you don't want to be surfing pipeline or other Hawaii type waves! You could hurt yourself and others. The best beach to start off as a beginner surfer is just a plain beach with small waves and no rocks, rivers, headlands etc. This way you don't have to worry about any kind of danger and therefore you can just have a good time!
Step 3: Getting started
As you roll up to the beach you want to wax up your surfboard to the nines! Use at least a whole bar of surf wax if your board doesn't already have any on it. This will give you the best chance to stand up which is the goal!
Step 4: Catching a wave
Once you have paddled out the back you want to park your board 50 meters past where the waves break. Most beginners make the mistake of surfing too close to the shoreline. This results in wipeouts galore as waves get steeper before they break, making them harder to catch without being thrown off your board.
So once you see your wave of choice form on the horizon, you want to turn your board towards the shoreline and paddle hard. The wave will pick you up and surge you towards the shoreline. From there, try to stand up. It will take a few attempts but hopefully you will have learned to surf within a few hours of practise!
Happy surfing!
