I am new to your campaign but just to open the discussion more here on this blog, what is your main theory of why all of this is being wasted? I can think of a couple different arguments. Some may say it is the greedy capitalists and their disdain for poor people. Others would say that it is government interference and overburdening regulations that force businesses to toss perfectly good products.
I would love to have this discussion with you and all of the followers here.
i can't speak for where @reko is, but in the US a lot of things have what is dubbed "shelf life" so when something is "over a designated time" it has to be thrown out! that means even perfectly good food. and there are regulations and legalities that wont let that food be donated! completely stupid! it is stupid laws- your second point i think.
i think also it is a human fear of real life... as a gardener and homesteader i know apples are not perfect ; food rots and goes to waste! the cycle of life happens very quickly. people try to have the perfect apples (all heavily sprayed) in the stores and the consumer looks at apples and only wants the perfect ones. it comes down to swaying public opinion and also public willingness to buy from local farmers and such as well. the stores carry what people want and what they buy so we are feeding the capitalist machine.

indeed but salt is the biggest problem imo especially as it's in everything and people don't think twice...
this is a lot of food that was been put to waste, we need to find a way to recycle all this food back to the common man who needs it instead of throwing it away , this is a waste and to imagine how many more are been thrown away in the whole of the country

This is really correct. Millions of food are thrown every day. Why not give it to the needy and poor instesd of throwing it to waste :'( i really love organization that help feed the hungry. Thanks for this motivational blog to help the needy. :) I Salute you sir.

So much goes into waste everyday while so many are going to bed with empty stomach. Thank you for your contribution to humanity.
That's impressive. Sad to think how much we contribute in taxes to food programs that don't end up supplying the quality you presented here. I don't fault anyone for using the assistance that's available but there should be a better way to help those in need and prevent that kind of waste. As an Ebayer, I ran across a channel where a couple make 6 figures a year, selling dumpstered merchandise, from electronics to furniture. @markrmorrisjr

That is a lot of food that is being wasted.
I'm starting to think that if we'd all Dumpster dive and then send the food to people who have no food/not enough food, then the 'food shortage' problem would be solved. Anyways, great post again!

just came across your article and want to say it's great what you are doing. In germany my girlfriend and I participate on a project called "foodsharing". It got quite big over the last few years. There we have partnerships with all kinds of supermarkets and the foodsavers come to them and get the food, what would be trashed but is still viable. Then you can take it for yourself or share it with others on the network. Of course government wasn't so fond of it as it was growing but it works.
Go on with it. Too much food is wasted in our society.
