I've always loved creating things from other people's trash.
Not necessarily trash such as milk jugs and packing peanuts, although that has happened - But more like items that people are planning to take to the Goodwill or broken pieces that people are trying to offload in their yard sales for $1. Growing up, my dad and granddad were always into thrifting/bargain hunting/picking, so naturally, I became rather fond of it all and begin doing it on my own as a sort of hobby.
A few months ago @uglysweater and I were visiting our hometown of Nashville, while there, I went bargain hunting every weekend, one day I came across a killer deal. Remember the Sassafras rounds that I turned into a table in Part 1? Well, the same day that I found those, I had actually gone to this guy's house to pick up the beautiful y-shaped slab of Elm you will see in today's piece. I gave him $1o for it, because I knew it would make a beautiful coffee table - Then I brought it all the way back to Idaho with us because I ran out of time in Nashville. And those super retro legs? Yeah, I scored those from a local junk sale - 4 for $1.
As soon as I found those legs, I knew exactly how they had to be used!
They were perfect for this slab! They were originally a brass color with a bit of rust mixed in, but I just to sand them down and spray them a matte back...Yeah, yeah, I know. I have an obsession with matte black. - So? I trimmed up the ends of the slab to make them a bit cleaner and then sanded the entire slab to 220 grit. I applied some New American stain, added about 3 coats of Tung oil and a layer of wax to make it super smooth, attached the legs and took pictures for a listing.
You wanna hear the juicy stats?
Amount invested: ~$20
Amount sold for: $160
BOOM!
Think this sort of thing is difficult? Think again!
Great work reusing and recycling! Haha. It's difficult for me as I'm a total klutz and I don't know what I'm doing. Awesome job!
Thanks so much, @dali.soh!
I thoroughly enjoy every piece you have made, I'm not sure I could ever say which one was my favorite. This one is brilliant for sure.
Keep these coming and
STEEM ON!
Thanks for all of your support, @noboxes!
Keep bringing it!!
Thanks, @gringalicious!
What a COOL! piece! You are amazing!
Haha Thanks, @lifes-a-donut!
Your stuff is so unique and artistic, I think you could charge more:) This stuff is fantastic!
I definitely could, but I would need a warehouse to keep it all! I enjoy the quicker turnarounds, though. haha :)
This is really a piece of art. It's so good to hear of recycling and you do it with flair. Well done. I am married to an artist, printmaker, chef and woodworker. I keep promising to put some of his art on Steemit as it really is beautiful. Well done you!
WOW! That's a lot of spouses! ;)
I would love to see some of his work some time!
Thank you rigaronib I'll post something soon, so you can see what a craftsman he was. He now uses cooking to show his skills!
Very cool!
What a stunning coffee table, amazing job, congrats!
Thanks, @bkdbkd! :D
What a great find! I'd love to get wood like this for only $20
You did a great job recycling.
Thanks a bunch, @tomekkk! It really was a beautiful slab.
This is the kind of table you see with hairpin legs, but your approach look great, and is cheaper. Great job making the table!
Thanks! Great to see you around, @anca3drandom! :)
It is always nice to reuse and recycle to reduce the trash trail. One man's trash can one man's treasure. Keep up the good work! And it is really a beautiful piece.
I agree! Thanks for your support, @life69!
nice one! You should make some how-to videos :)
Not a bad idea! Thanks, @geniusloci!
@geniusloci, that is an awesome idea!
@rigaronib, you should totally do that!
i love that you lightly stained the wood and went with the oil and wax. showcasing the natural grains of wood is beautiful and very much my style.
cc @phiunit
Natural is always better! :D
Thanks for the comment, @ladythisandthat!
Wow, that is awesome. You are very talented and made quite a profit. Nice work. I'm glad I found you on here. I love the kind of wood furniture you make. You got a new follower.
Hey, super cool! Thanks for your support, @walkingkeys!
No problem. Keep up the great work.
Excellent work rig, you do this full time right now or what? You could certainly make a name for yourself, this is good stuff.
Not full time, but I would definitely like to head in that direction! People's will to buy is low right now thanks to the holidays, but when tax season comes around, things will start looking up again.
Yea, not too many people buy tables and dressers as Christmas presents ;p
Haha It's the truth!
Wow!!! More posts like this! I love this table. So unique!
I also love recycling and pimping old furniture. My dad is actually a cabinet maker, so I think that’s where I have it from :)
Merry Christmas to you!
@susanne! So good to hear from you! Hope all is well!
Recycling furniture and the likes has really become an obsession of mine. I love it!
And a very merry Christmas to you, too! :D
