I sent a mail to US senator regarding my concerncs about the repealing of net neutrality by th FCC, and i recieved a personal email to answer my concerns about freedom of information and freedom of speech on the internet. I will post it here for all to read:
Thank you for your message regarding the repeal of net neutrality. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
I am a firm supporter of "net neutrality" — the idea that Internet users should have unobstructed access to lawful content and services of their choice, and that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should not be allowed to block or discriminate access to certain sites or applications over others. The Internet’s incredible economic success has been made possible thanks to its open platform where anyone with a good idea can connect to users across the globe and compete on a level playing field for their business. I believe that people should be able to access different web content within the bounds of the law, regardless of the political views or opinions expressed on a particular site.
On December 14, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to approve Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to reverse the FCC’s 2015 Open Internet Order. This vote rescinds the classification of broadband Internet access services as a telecommunication service, allowing ISPs to block or throttle content, or create fast lanes for companies willing to pay extra fees. This dangerous reversal is a threat to free speech and the freedom of our press – both core principles of our democracy.
As you may know, after the FCC’s vote on December 14, 2017, I have helped to lead fifty Senate colleagues in a plan to introduce a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that would undo the FCC’s reversal of the 2015 Open Internet Order. CRA resolutions allow Congress to overturn regulatory actions at federal agencies with a simple majority vote in the House and Senate. I will also support legal challenges in the courts, because the FCC failed to follow the law in this vote.
I am privileged to serve on the Senate Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the FCC, and I assure you I that I will fight to ensure your rights are protected. The Internet must remain a free and open platform for consumers and innovators. Consumers, not companies and not the government, must continue to determine the winners and losers on the Internet.
Thank you again for your message. Please contact me in the future with any additional questions or concerns.
