10 Days ago I wrote about this small city in North California with the highest per capita homelessness in the country. Not too far away (in fact barely an hour) in the next county they're facing similar problems but working on different solutions than Ukiah at the moment.
Sharing Society Ukiah Newsletter 2017-08-12: North California Update
Sharing Society Launch
What have we been doing: Handing out cards, helping some in need locally, meeting community representatives from various groups and waiting on the website platform. Did you know we're still in the 'Pre-Launch' phase? This just means that right now we're working on a web platform that is going to spur community support for those in need, making it easier to help and give. That's why our business cards read "Buy. Sell. Find. Trade. Help. Give" - Our goal is to build a decentralized community based 2nd hand exchange and what you could call 'charity' for those that really need it. Honestly, who needs usable clothes more, Goodwill to re-sell them, or a person without a home, living on the streets who has theirs worn down, stolen, or just plain filthy from the lifestyle society has imprisoned them in?
Our first step with the website NOW however will be a community calendar for us and the pilot area in North California. We expect at least the calendar to be ready within weeks and the website platform to be up in some fashion within the coming months.
What's Happening in North California
10 Days Ago I sent out the exciting news of Ukiah's Homeless Resource Center approval by the city planning commission. The last winter shelter closed the end of april. There was an appeal filed to the decision, though my guess is it won't affect the shelter, at the minimum the plans for the winter shelter to re-open November 1st, if you know more however please respond to this email.
Also be careful with reading the Ukiah Daily Journal online as after a certain number of articles they will want you to subscribe.
I think most of us have heard that Ukiah apparently has the highest per capita homelessness in the country. Not too far away (in fact barely an hour) in the next county they're facing similar problems but working on different solutions than Ukiah at the moment. "Project Restoration" has 16 different focus areas, modeling some after success in Yuba City where it's said 85% of those helped did not go back to being homeless.
"From the trash, how many times a transient is arrested, medical issues and how often they end up in the hospital and other issues that come about can add up to costing a county over $62,000 annually. To give a person housing with services can cost only $11,000." - READ MORE
The Normal Routine
We could really use volunteers to show the disadvantaged community that their city cares; anything you'd like to help out with, be creative. We are looking for someone to takeover the Saturday clothing drive (collecting donations, organizing and distributing to the homeless). Please use the contact email below to coordinate if you're interested.
If you're ready to volunteer in any way, we could get you a SharingSociety.org placard for your car door to show off the spirit of sharing and caring! At cost would be about $30 but we can help you accommodate to whatever your needs are.
Remember, SharingSociety.org is still on the groundfloor. Our plan is to make this a decentralized mass social movement and we're working intensely with learning how to solve the problems of community and bring a user-friendly experience to charity as well as buy/sell/trade/give/find social services in local economies.
Help Us Out
If you'd like to help, donate, buy a T-Shirt or learn more, reply to this email or send comments to:
If you're in Ukiah, CA our pilot launch city you can offer to volunteer. Please email your phone # and how you'd like to help to the email above.
For those that filled out the survey already, much thanks.
Anyone who has not, this would be a great easy way to help us out and move forward:
T-Shirts!
We can do white and ash grey currently. We can alter the design as you like. Price we recommend is $20 per shirt though we can go cheaper in bulk or accommodate near any price you can afford, and of course the more you'd want to pay would go straight to donate to help the homeless in Ukiah, CA - Once the website is up we'll have a direct purchase option, for now please contact with the email below.
Sharing Society's ultimate goal is not to provide handouts but to build and connect local communities, recycle/reuse and facilitate person to person exchange of 2nd hand goods.

- A first step to helping the homeless & poor in North California. We're currently working on the web platform to facilitate sharing in the local community to solve the problems of poverty society and government have created over decades.
I wish you the best of luck !!!
Great post. I was homeless at one point and it really is hard to get yourself back up.. especially with no help
amazingly hard. After meeting dozens of homeless in NorCal I now know the extent of what the problem is. It's ridiculous how society and all these individual cities have let it get this far.
I hear that Chico (and now Yuba City too) are good examples in North California of communities solving the problem to a good extent.
Can I ask where you were homeless at?
And you can subscribe to our newsletter it's just a handful of emails a month IF that.
