The building of the workshop is almost complete

in #life2 years ago

In the last few weeks all of the paneling has gone on the building. First the roof, then they poured the concrete floor. And now finally the side panels are going up. I really like the color I picked for the roof and sides as it matches my other much smaller shed. A ranger green with a off white color was a good choice I think. It looks so much bigger than I thought it would, and really looking forward to using its 5000 square feet of space inside. Once the doors are up, moving in work equipment can begun.

Seeing them put up the roof made me quite nervous, how they climbed up there with no safety equipment as far as I could see. But they moved with confidence and made quick work on putting it all up on the trusses.

A small trailer the builder has on site, it has lots of spots for tools and hardware inside. It was all built out inside for extra storage compartments.

We can see the roofing going on one side, and then they complete on the other and seal the center.

They used their skid steer to bring the large pieces of metal up on the roof, along with weather barrier and then affixed it all to the trusses. Lol that pine tree to the left, its looking quite one sided these days. Since we cut down two large oak trees that were leaning bad in the direction of the building.

Me and my farm hand did some trash cleanup while they were putting the roof on that day. As we left the area and came back a few hours later its amazing how much progress they have made.

Driving into town we passed one of the concrete mixer trucks on the way to my property to pour the pad for the workshop along with a small lip for one of the entrances to the workshop.

We can see the framing made for the small service door and the 16 foot drive through door that will be going up. I purchased a steel walk through door, I think the 16 foot doors is are roll ups.

With the concrete dry enough to walk on, it was nice going inside and checking it all out.

The concrete guys want the roof up to protect the drying concrete from rain. But want the sides open to help it breath to dry better.

On a windy day we walked out to the building without the walls up, it was like a wind tunnel... haha

We can see the pad they poured, will help with long trailers.

The side walls were put up a week or so after pouring the concrete. They started with the far wall and worked their way around.

Now there is a roof it feels so much taller. We went with a 13 foot roof to make sure there is enough space for a car lift for when I want to get one installed. The concrete is also poured extra thick so we can drive in heavy vehicles without worrying about cracking the pad. The thickness of the concrete is also rated for the car lift, so extra thick.

Seeing all the panels go up helps my brain see the space better. When it was all framing it was quite hard to imagine, but now the walls are going up it helps a lot.

That trailer was at the workshop site every day, they had everything inside to get the work done.

I am wondering if I should do free standing shelves or attach them to those large beams and horizontal 2x4s.

Ah nice to have all this space, looking forward to moving stuff in as soon as the doors are completely up so no water gets inside. Waiting on the door installers is taking a little longer than expected.

While the construction was going on we ran power cables over to the building. It will be ran on solar power. Using 8 gauge wires, my friend @makinstuff will be coming out to wire it all in along with his friend that has a lot of experience with these things. Really nice they are driving all the way from Alabama to get me set up.. Really thankful for their help. A transfer switch will be placed inside the shop along with all two homes to power the homestead.

Only the doors are left now, the small service door has been hung. And my blueberry bushes are starting to flower right next to the building.

We can see the size difference between the two doors.

The spacing between the side panels and roof was filled as well.

The gaps can be seen by the sunlight coming in, but will be all filled by the end of construction.

The workmen and builder have been very careful around my blueberry bushes and thornless blackberries. Doing their best not to bump them or lay work equipment on them. I am really glad they are watching out for them and not breaking them all because of the construction just a few feet away. Though I feel bad they have had to deal with that thorned quince bush right next to them.. haha I did not plant that, it was already there.

Whats next?

Have the two 16' large doors installed.

Cut hole in side panel and run in power from solar.

Once the doors are up, start moving boxes and equipment into workshop.

Build out shelves, work benches and other storage for building.

Get a vehicle lift installed.

Plant wildflower seeds and other plants along erosion areas where recent dirt was added to help lock it in.

Have gutters installed, and a rain water collection system we will use to water the near by 1/3 area enclosed garden. Will need to have a retaining wall built for this, waiting on bids for that work.

It looks like they are doing a really good job on this space. Love seeing it coming along!

I was thinking about the attaching to beams vs free standing thing. The only thing I could think of is if the shelving is attached to the beams, there might not be an air space sufficient in the chance of condensation forming. Free standing would allow air flow, preventing this or reducing it.

They sure are, its pretty amazing looking back at these posts and seeing how it all started and progressed.

Oh good point, that is something I will need to keep in mind. I may just build them free standing.. thanks for the tip.

It's shaping up nicely! Those big doors are going to be awesome and the garden/ water collection pro move!

Thanks bud, I think so too.. 16 foot doors should handle just about anything that I need I would think.

Looking forward to getting started on the water collection part. Need to build up a retaining wall first.

Wow this is actually amazing .
Getting up a structure like this really takes alot too you know .alot of time and dedication and funds too ,
Its really amazing, thanks for sharing this too though

Ah thank you, I think so as well. Hehe yeah it indeed does require lots of funds and dedication.

That looks great! That will be a great sized workshop, it's huge!
!CTP

Sure will be.. thanks

That's really coming together nicely man! Looks great. I'm sure you're itching to get into the space fully now that it's so close to being finished!

Hah yeah I am, started drawing out what I want to do. I think its almost time to start building work benches and shelves.

Nice! So, besides Hive... Is the farm going to be your other main source of income, or do you have a remote job or something? I don't recall if you've ever mentioned what you do for work. (If that's on purpose and you don't want to share that info with the chain that's cool too of course!)

Intense.. Your future workplace will be huge ! I imagine you must be pretty impatient :) Thank you for sharing all the different steps of the wooden structure !

I am very interested in following your different stages of installation and the funny thing is that until a few months ago, we were thinking of building a house with the same framing method... Well, now we are also on our way to the countryside, but with an old 18th century building ^^The purchase is still in progress, but I hope to tackle it all in the summer !

Good luck and good progress 💪

Yeah sure will be, need to figure out how I want to build it out inside still. Ah no problem, hope your construction goes smoothly. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting all the hardware out into the countryside. So hopefully all will go well with ours.

thanks much

Finally we gave up the idea of building for an old house already built more than two centuries ago... But the idea of building in wood is still on my mind and that's why I enjoyed your detailed article !

Be well and thanks again, happy Easter to you ✌️

An agricultural environment of more than 5,000 square feet of space, we here in Cumaná, Sucre state-Venezuela, say when everything is going well, "That's going like wind in its sails", that is, when we are at sea in a sailboat, that It's going excellent friend @solominer which makes me very happy. I really congratulate you and everything will finally be very good. successes

Yeah it is going to be quite big... Oh cool. Well it has all gone quite smoothly so a good saying indeed.

thank you

Éxitos hermano @solominer , siempre desde Cumaná deseándole Éxitos.

Congratulations, man, you did a great job. The construction of the workshop is also completed, just some work left to do and that's it. I can't wait to see the next step.

Thanks dude, yep just about all wrapped up now.

Damn that went up quick

Yeah sure is.. less than a month and its done

The Amish would have done it on a Tuesday lol.

Quite happy for you getting everything built but damn am i jealous of that shop.

Thanks bud.. hehe yeah I have been waiting my whole life for something like this. Previously my biggest garage was a 20x20 foot 2 car garage.. big changes now.

Hope you can get one too one day.

One hell of step up for you for sure! Congrats on making it happen!

My property doesn't really allow for it. Access to the upper property is super limited but that is where the flat expanse of ground is. We've talked of buying the property south of us that would give us easy access but not with the real estate bubble still here.

Man, look at all that new real-estate for a solar panel expansion! :D

Hehe yeah man gotta put all that power I am going to be generating to use.

Wow. That's gonna be an awesome man-cave !

Hehe yeah bud cannot wait to get it all built outside.
