Healthy brain, healthy body
You walk into a room and you can not remember why you went there in the first place, has this happened to you? Suddenly you get worried thinking is this me getting old?
Well our brain is constantly changing, busy making new pathways and forming new neurons all the time, you can relax, to get old sure has its advantages. Our brain can get more healthy and sharper at any age.
Our brain manages our whole body, it should be in tip top condition at all times to be able to do just that.
In 1960 the way people thought about the brain changed. A professor at the Berkeley University in the USA did some tests on rats and found that the rats that was left in a room with a lot of toys and other rats to play with, had a lot more grey matter that formed in the parts of the brain responsible for motor- and visual skills than the rats that was just kept in a cage.
It took a long time and lots of evidence to get people to see that the human brain can change and better itself. If you want to use the full capacity of your brain, you must know how the brain and the rest of your body work together. Our brain gives instructions to the rest of our body through chemical and electrical signals, therefore there has to be good communication between the different parts of the brain says dr. Ian Roberts from the University of Texas.
Like any good boss our brain looks after the rest of the people working for him(our different organs and limbs) the brain knows what these limbs and organs need to be working at their best or what they lack and is therefore not preforming well.
But how can I improve my brain and its workings?
Just remember what is good for your body is good for your brain and the other way around. Good food and exercise is always good because it gives your brain the omega 3 and certain proteins it needs, it is like "fertilizer" for your brain.
We have to give our brain new challenges because that is what forms the new pathways in our brain and we need new pathways for our brain to get smarter.
*We can learn a new language or build puzzles or do crossword puzzles or play Sudoku.
*You can drive a new route to work or back home.
*Use your pencil to write down your grocery list rather than type in on the computer, it gives your brain a change to process the
information. We tend not to think while we type.
*Drink more milk, the calcium in the milk helps build new brain cells, it is also said that milk has a anti oxidant that prevents cell damage. If you don't like milk you can also eat dark green leafy vegetables, cheese or yogurt.
*Play with a ball the catch throw action is good for the brain and the smaller the ball the better.
*Eat whole wheat bread it has sink that helps the brain smell and taste.
*Read a noval, it is said that the emotional intelligence of a person gets better and that helps them to deal better with others.
Go on, it is never too late to sharpen and better your brain!
