It was a bit of a rainy day here in the Pacific Northwest, so it was a perfect time to go see a movie I have been excited about. I decided to take my 8 year old son along with me, and introduce him to one of my favorite stories.

When I first cracked open the book Ready Player One (Cline, 2011), I couldn't put it down. It was right up my alley. Being a child of the 80's, I completely connected with all of the nostalgic references and humor. I love computers, video games and futuristic stuff. It also hit home with me, being that the main character of the book is from Columbus, Ohio. I spent part of my childhood and adult life in Columbus as well!
On the drive over to the theater I took the time to explain some of the back story of the book, and gave my son a brief synopsis. We also downloaded the movie trailer on my phone, so he could see some of the cool graphics and cut scenes. He could sense the excitement in my voice, and my excitement began to rub off on him. He couldn't wait to get to the theater.
Of course we got a big bag of popcorn, candy and Coke slushies bigger than the size of our heads!
The movie ended up being really great! It kept my sons interest the entire time, and he loved it. It was definitely a bit different from the book, but that is to be expected, thats how it always turns out. It wasn't different in a bad way, just some of the quests and challenges were more adapted for a movie audience. Steven Spielberg, knows how to direct a story. I was thrilled when I first found out that he would be making the movie version of my favorite book.
As we were walking out to the car after the movie he kept bringing up all of his favorite parts, and then asked if he could read the book. Being that I lent my copy to a friend after I finished reading it, I suggested to him that we head over to Barnes & Noble and pick him up a copy. He chose the edition that had the same cover as the one that I had read a few years back. He's super excited to take it to school, show his friends, and tell them all about the movie!

If you are a fan of the book, I would highly recommend that you go see this movie. This is also a film that you want to see in theater, with the high res graphics, and awesome soundtrack it's definitely worth the price of admission. Even if you haven't read the book, I would still recommend anyone go see it. It's a Spielberg film, its not going to disappoint! However, as usual, I still think the book was better than the movie.

Thank you. We had a great day!
Will watch this movie :)
Yess, you definitely should. Lots of good game and movie references.
It brought me back to the 80s. So much nostalgia. I wonder if there'll be a rendition in the future moving the nostalgia factor to the 90s. Hope you enjoyed the film! Just saw Avengers: Infinity War today and it was action packed.
Totally brings you back to the 80's! The book does an even better job doing that. We were debating on which movie to see. I heard really good things about Avengers too. :)
