I've finally done it! I've hit 500 followers, and, more importantly, I did it without following a single person.
I see these posts pop up all the time, and when you look at the poster's profile you see they've followed 5000 people. It's trivially easy to get 500 followers when you follow everyone on steemit.
I've done it the hard way. I've done it by constantly staying on top of my profile, posting every. single. day. Constantly searching for the best content, as well as occasionally creating my own. I've done it the hard way because I care about my followers. I spend every night writing comments on every. single. one. of my followers posts. Many of you reading this know this already. I care about you all, and I think you all recognize that and I thank you all for allowing me a glimpse into your life.
I'd like to thank all of my regular commenters and voters, in particular @fitinfun @coininstant @longshot @pandorasbox @bigbear @woodywood143 @patricksanlin @honusurf @kdtkaren @sunscape @thethreehugs @taskmaster4450 @saffisara. I'm sure I'm forgetting names, and I apologize if that's the case. I may not always respond to your comments, but I appreciate you coming back.

That makes sense. It can be difficult. But I want to follow people to find them again. Before I follow, I look at a lot of their posts to see if I like what they are posting.
My friend @world-travel-pro only follows about 20 just for the reason you state. I don't even use my feed - instead I use the feed in steemnow and filter it for the type of posts I want to see. Much easier!
It's a strange place to have a hole, for sure. Finding people should not really be hard :)

I know...I have 2400 comments or so...it takes a lot of time to post that many.
People dont realize how difficult it truly is...and then the mix in some quality posts....it will eat up a few hours very quickly.

well done mate, not following anybody at all and bragging about it comes across as a bit selfish though, like you're really not interested in what anyone else has to say unless it's about your own posts.. It's your feed but I would recommend that perhaps you follow a few people who have similar interests to you. its really good to be part of a community. no offence intended, just an observation.
well in that case, if you're giving the money away you're excused... but not really because without following anyone your account is a one way street and no man is an island ! steemit is a community and there's no I in team
