4 Easy Steps To Get Rid Of Your Bad Habits

Break your Bad Habits!

A Habit is a behavior we repeat so regularly, that it becomes normal for us. Simply everyone of us has at least one, might it be a good or bad one. Nonetheless, for today we´d like to focus on the bad habits and how to get rid of them.

It´s definitely not going to be easy, but you can be assured that the steps listed below will help you to get rid of your bad habits in a shorter period of time. Everything you need to do is to put some efforts and dedication into getting rid of them, because otherwise you won´t succeed.

Refocus your Mind

This is obviously the first step to kick out the bad habits because all habits are basically programmed by your own mind. It’s time to find something else that can replace those thoughts and programs in your head.

Let us take smoking as an example. Now, smoking can be very challenging to quit. However, research shows that those who were able to stop smoking and stay away from it permanently were mostly those that had something else they took their minds to. Might it be the pictures of what could happen to your body or a newly discovered passion for sports. You just need to give your mind something else to focus on instead of your daily cigarettes.

Keep Track of your Progress

After you´ve made the decision to quit that bad habit by refocusing your mind, it’s time to keep a journal of how you are doing at it. In case you don´t do so you are very likely to fall back into your bad habits without knowing and won´t achieve your goal of getting rid of them. Therefore e.g. in case you like to stop smoking, just write down the number of cigarettes you´ve had during the day. If you are dedicated and see a reduction on it, let´s say from 5 to 3 cigarettes a day, you will definitely be encouraged to go on.

Never give up!

You won´t reach your goals in case you don´t develop a certain “never give up” mentality. Getting rid of bad habits is not going to be an easy task. You may have to fall many times, but what matters is how many times you are willing to get up again. It´s no shame to fall back into a bad habit of yours, but it would be a shame in case you don´t do anything about it.

Reward Yourself

Let´s say you signed up for a competition and someone tells you that you get a million dollars in case you win. Do you think this might boost your commitment level or would it rather stay the same? I guess we might agree that it would definitely rise. You´d probably do anything in order to win just to receive the promised reward.

The same thing applies for rewards, that you grant yourself for each milestone you achieve in regards to quitting a bad habit. Well, most probably no one may be willing to give you money or reward you for quitting, but you can come up with something for yourself. It could be a vacation or anything else you desire.

So to sum it up, if you can commit to these steps listed above, you can be sure that getting rid of a bad habit is only a matter of time and commitment. You will definitely be happier at the end of the day without them.

Great post! I think everyone has a bad habit and a lot of people might have a few good ones too, but I guess we don't want to get rid of the good ones. Very helpful - thank you for sharing this with us :)

thank you @theywillkillyou :)
For sure we all got some good habits as well and no one would ever recommend anyone to get rid of those ;)

That's a nice pep post, thank you for writing! I especially liked the "refocus your mind" section because this is always so helpful to me. When you are keeping your mind busy with focusing on something else, it actually works great. The only problem is that it is working only for a short time, my patients always end up with the "I don't know what I can do anymore?!-situation". Especially quitting addictions is horrible because the cravings are popping up very often on a day...do you have any ideas?

Maybe you would like to read Psychology for Dummies #1:Overcoming fears it fits a little bit to your post 😉! Greetings @travellove

I guess you probably know better what to do, but maybe it would be good for them to start not just one new activity to distract their mind but at least two or more, so that they always got something else to think about :)

Leaving bad habits is most difficult job for most of us, but improving yourself gives confidence. Thank you for the good post.
