RE: A Swastika In The Window: My Surprising Chat With This Truck Driver Yesterday

in #life7 years ago

Oh, how upset people can get over flag issues... In my opinion, if flying the Nazi flag (or the Stars-and Bars) is offensive, then flying the hammer-sickle Soviet flag should be as well. In fact, flying the Stars-and-Stripes can be considered as just as offensive (and is by many people), since comparable atrocities have been committed under it. Same goes for the Mexican flag, btw, and even the Hungarian flag. No exceptions. To me it's a huge hypocrisy to highlight the crimes of one regime while ignoring those of another.
In this regard, respect for those who have the guts to do it, and those, like you guys, who don't mind asking about it. It was so good to read that the guy turned out to be a pleasant, interesting person.
I guess there is no law against flying the swastika in Australia, but it seems like there are still many people who take offense. I don't fly any flags out of principle, but I don't get offended at people who do, whichever flag it may be.

Some brilliant points there @stortebeker. Thank you for the perspective. You're right regarding the representation of what a flag means, it's a heavily loaded symbol, representing a complex collection of issues and, as they say, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. I'm so glad that I wrote this post as some of the perspectives and comments are very interesting to read, yours in particular. Thanks!

Thank you for the positive reply! Here on Steemit I catch myself being more careful not to step on anyone's toes, at least more so than on FB. But if I didn't express my opinions, what good would that be?

Yeah I agree. The FB behaviour vastly differs to what you generally find here.
