We have lived in Southern Kentucky for little more than two years, we love our homestead and have gotten to know some pretty great people. Some of those people have been extremely instrumental in showing us the ropes of these Kentucky Hills.
I have had the good pleasure of knowing Russell Dolen for two years. Two years of great friendship and comradery. He was always a phone call away, for the most part it didn’t matter what he was doing, he would come over and help. He never would except payment for anything, that’s just the way he was….
Russell was the guy that many in the community would turn to, they might need a couple bucks to get by or need work for a day. He would take care of them, sometimes he got paid back, sometimes he didn’t.
Whenever someone would ask where I live I would always tell them I live next to Russell Dolen, everybody knew him, and most loved him. I would not know half the people I know here now if it were not for Russell, he was my go to for advice and direction, he knew these hills inside and out and the people who lived in them.
Most Friday nights I would be next door having a beer (No bars here, its 40 miles to the nearest alcohol) with the guys. Fortunately or unfortunately I was working out of state. The other guys that usually stop by all had other things to do. If we would have all been there as we usual, there would have been another 4 or 5 bodies lating on the ground, Russell was brutally shot by a crazed man who was just looking to kill after killing his wife. After a gun battle with the county sheriff’s deputies the crazed man was killed…….
Russell Dolen was a kind man, a generous man, a good man, he will be missed by many. Our community and the Appalachia regionas a whole is less on good man today.
Russell Dolen Rest in Peace……..

So sorry for your loss. It's always tough to lose someone like that in the community.
May he rest in peace, and may time heal the wound!
My condolences to the Dolen family. It is a shame that a good man was taken before his time.
Thanks.... he was a good man
So sad. Condolences on his passing. His legacy is the kindness he planted in his community and I'm sure it will live on for generations.
He was not a rich man, but he always gave from the heart, I had not thought about it in terms of a legacy, but you are correct! Since I have known him I have tried be more like his giving spirit, I am sure I will never be able to fill the shoes, but there are other like me and maybe collectively we can....
Thanks for the comment.....
Sorry for your loss and your friend's passing.
