His career seemed promising, defeating former Romanian champion heavyweight Dumitru Pavelescu. He died at the age of 22, officially due to a tuberculosis, but his relatives challenged this option, claiming that Gogea Mitu would have been poisoned, and poisoning would have been set up by envious people on his success.
Gogea Mitu has an absolutely unique story. The tallest novel from the beginning of the 20th century, on its real name Gogu Ştefănescu. He was born on 14 July 1914 in Marsani, a town in Dolj County, about 50 kilometers from Craiova city (Romania) and died only 22 years in Bucharest in 1936.He was part of a family of 11 children, and his mother was 16 when he was born. At the age of three, Gogea looks like a six-year-old. He was self-taught, learned to read alone. At age 10, there was no place in the school bank anymore. At the age of 17, he embarked on the Globus Circus in Bucharest, where he easily bent steel bars, his power snatching the admiration of the audience.
In 1934, former Italian pugilist and seeker Umberto Lancia noticed him at an Obor fair and offered to sponsor a boxing career. After finishing the boxing school in Paris, Gogea Mitu began to practice this sport successfully, defeating KO with Italian Severio Gizzo and former heavyweight champion Dumitru Pavelescu. The first match took place on the former Venus arena in Bucharest.
One player challenged him, the German Bergam, who also had over 2 meters, and the match ended in a draw. Everyone believed that Mitu would be unstoppable and have a fulminating career. It was obviously very strong, but quite slow and very good. The Americans were mad after him and could hardly wait to see him live. It was not to be. This is not the only controversy about Gogea Mitu. The press in France and the US had other measures for the Romanian giant: 2.21 or 2.26. Still, the novel was considered the highest man in the world. It was said that he was eating 10 kg of food at a table and drank 5 bottles of wine and coffee.
