Ok! If you haven’t heard of the term “Bucket list”, it simply means a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. This entails your goals, dreams and aspirations.
One thing that makes it interesting also is the fact there is no rule on how your bucket list should be like. You can draw it up the way you like… and feel free to add one or 2 crazy, out this world stuffs on it too.
My little twist however is that I don’t think “Bucket lists” should be all about a lifetime per say. You should have a yearly… even quarterly bucket list. One of the pecks of it is that making that short term goal or aspiration pass as an item in your bucket list takes off that feeling of utmost anxiety. While writing your goals/dreams plainly may be all formal and serious, only things like: getting a master’s degree, getting married etc. a bucket permit will accommodate fun activities alongside the serious ones without you having any guilt of being unserious. Imaging having “getting a master’s degree” alongside “Go scuba diving”
One may argue however that having “serious goals” and “informal activities” side by on same list may lead to one being lazy and picking only the informal activities and giving excuses while bypassing the serious ones. That to me is dependent on the individual involved. People write down their goals every year (short and long term) and do absolutely nothing about it.
So! To the crux of the topic at hand, what should be in your 2018 bucket list?
A long list may not be realistic so here’s 5 reasonable inclusions to whatever you may draw up
Pursue that passion: So you’ve been putting aside that thing you love to do sooo much for lack of time maybe. Why not start it this year, no matter how small just start something and grow from there. Starting is most times the challenge, but if that can be overcome the wheels will start spinning gradually.
What is your passion? Is it to be an artist? To sing and perform? To be a life coach? To travel? You can start pursuing part time and see where how it develops from there.
Lose/add some weight: You are overweight and have procrastinated for a long time about losing some unneeded fats. Why not take up that challenge this year. Or are you on the other side of the weight curve like me? You should structure a diet and try gain some needed weight. This is part of my list for this year too. We must find that weight gain gene wherever it hiding. Hehehe
Learn something new: This could be a skill, a language, how to use a software program, a musical instrument, public speaking, and the list abounds. Mike Murdock refers to himself as a master learner. When you stop learning you actually start dying.
Be open minded and acquire something new and different from what you’ve always know and done.
I’m trying to improve my Adobe Photoshop skills. I think I may add one or two other new stuffs I haven’t tried before.
Travel: Someone once said “traveling is a part of education”, and having travelled to every region of Nigeria I can attest to that fact. Travelling broadens your horizon about life; it makes you see life from a different perspective. Common! Take that vacation you’ve always pushed aside and visit that place you’ve always wanted to visit.
I look forward to exploring other parts of Africa and the world at large.
My mum used to say something about traveling and it goes thus: “The legs that travel’s far will see more than the eyes that have lived longer”
Touch someone’s life: There are definitely different ways you do can this. You can even touch the lives of people rather than just one person, and it isn’t rocket science. You can volunteer to do some community service with a charity organization, visit an orphanage with some gift items though this has become trendy these days with people celebrating their birthdays. I think it shouldn’t just be about birthdays.
I have this on my list as well. I’m sure going to be doing some community service this year too.
As I wrap this up, I’ll like to quickly add that as our faces differ so do our dreams and aspirations. But I encourage you to challenge yourself this year, summon the courage and “eat that frog” in the words of Brian Tracy.
