From what I gather, it was absolute carnage.
Bearing in mind that there was no social media or cell phones back then. You weren't constantly in the loop 24/7 like today. People would have just set-out, forgetting that the road system had been completely reversed, and caused chaos.
If anyone's ever driven in a country with different hand traffic from what you're used to, you'll understand the difficulty of constantly fighting your instinct and muscle memory dragging you onto the other side of the road.
Anyway, in the UK we refused to adapt to the European standard. We're still contrarians, annoying the rest of Europe with our insolence. Some things never change.
I wish I could have been there. What a day of utter chaos, would've been fun to witness it.
A short term nuisance for a long term gain. Kind of like changing from imperial to the metric system. Some countries have changed, but still use the old system in everyday life, generations later!
