Basically a habit is the intersection of three things : knowledge, skill and desire.
Knowledge is what to do and why to do it. Skill is for how to do. And the last desire is the compulsion or motivation , the urge to do. If we wanna make something a habit in our life, we need all three of these.
Let us understand by an example. We at workplaces may be very ineffective in interacting with our colleagues, friends or family. We keep on telling them what we think but we never try to listen to them. For interaction to happen, the speaking and listening should happen at the same time. This is the basic principle of human interaction.
Even we realized and understood that in order to interact effectively we have to listen to people but the problem is that we do not have the skill to listen. We have never learnt how to listen deeply to others. So knowledge and the skill are the first two columns of developing a habit.
Now we come to the last point which is desire. We have already figured out that we have to listen to others and it requires a skill. But what if we do not want to listen. We do not have any desire. It can't be a habit in our life. So making a habit we require all the three dimensions of knowledge, skill and desire.
