In early 2013 I lost my job and apartment and decided to make my own way through life. I went off the grid - the energy grid and starting putting all of my skills to work for myself instead of for others.
I was working for many years as a PHP programmer, database programmer, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expert, website developer and videographer.
Basically I would write software that powered a company's online presence. Then I would maintain and improve that software while making that company show up all over page one of the search results. I was good at what I did. So good that I generally programmed myself out of a job within a year each time.
I automated the software and would be let go. I left the company in a better position but my bank account was always still empty. I was naive. I was often promised great riches, higher pay, company stock and more. I believed them and worked for peanuts.
This was New York. Costs were high and the hiring process generally took up to 3 months. I would burn through my pitiful savings while looking for a new job.
I was getting pretty good at seeing the end of a job coming by now.
In 2012 I started working on YouTube videos and writing articles for my own website. I had been working on the website since about 2007 but really got going this year.
In January 2013 I lost my job. I had a free camper I was playing around with and restoring out in the back yard at my apartment. I started making videos out of the camper. I figured I would give this a try while I looked for a job.
My landlord did something very strange. He doubled my rent. Well, he was going to anyway. He thought he had me over a barrel. He figured that I was going to make a lot of money online so he was going to get a cut of it. He told me to either pay up or get out.
To his incredible surprise I got out. The next day I had a place to live on 56 acres in the country paying $200 a month rent. I could not move the camper because he was blocking me (long story). Anyway, I moved all my belongings out of the apartment and into the camper before the end of the month.
I spent the last of my money moving my camper and belongings to the new property.
And so begins The Off Grid Project
It was harsh and cold. I suffered miserably. I made videos of my experiences. People loved it. My videos and my channel became a hit. My numbers started to grow rapidly.

I had to work a couple days a week until I was making enough from my own business to pay my bills.
Soon though, I was on my own feet. I had left the rat race behind. I was working for myself in my own field of expertise. I was doing what I loved the most - for myself. It felt good.
With time I started to buy solar panels and build up my usable energy capacity. I had gone from 65 watts of solar panels to 1,200 watts in time.
I rigged up a rain water collection source on the roof of my camper. Now I had free water for cooking, bathing and drinking. I had a filter I used for this purpose.
I eventually got a motor home with the help and donations of my viewers. My numbers were growing rapidly and my YouTube channel was really taking off. People were wondering what is Troy going to do next? Will he live or die? Will he kill himself in an accident?
I admit, I was not an expert at anything I was doing but I did it all myself. Sometimes things went wrong - very wrong. But I always came through somehow.
I renovated the motor home and used that as my new home. The old camper was a mess anyway. It was held together with duct tape. Literally. There was no insulation and no paneling in the living room. It was a mess. But it had served me as a home for a year. I had a certain love for the old heap.
The motor home had its own challenges. But I got through.

The following year I made the decision to build a tiny house on wheels. I had never built anything before. I had no idea how to begin. I drew up a very rough and childish drawing of my ideas and showed it on my videos. My viewers helped me out by making a better looking drawing. Another viewer drafted a plan showing exactly where each 2x4 would go, including the windows and everything according to my drawings. It was good.
I had a love for that old camper but it had to go. I needed a trailer to build my tiny house on. I did not have the money to buy a proper trailer. I studied a lot online about construction and building tiny homes. My viewers taught me a lot too through the comments. This was a community of sorts. I was building up a community of people helping one another. A group of friends that I would later call my second family.
It was not all one sided either. I would get tears in my eyes reading an email or letter from someone who told me how I gave them hope to start over. How I helped someone through their last months of cancer, putting a smile on their face each day. How I helped people with anxiety problems go out and overcome. It felt good. It kept me driving on.
I started picking up trolls along the way. Its sort of like the unwanted groupies who follow the movie stars around. Not to compare myself with them but its the best way I can compare it. Many of them still harass me to this day. Certainly at least one of them will show its ugly head here in the comments below. (I hope I am wrong).
I added the last bit for anyone who will follow my videos. They will see a lot of stuff that happened. Anyway....
I loved that old camper but it had to go. So I began the demolition of my beloved home. It was sad. It was hard. But I had a vision and nothing was going to slow me down.
I stripped the trailer down to its bare frame. I wire brushed the entire trailer and then painted it. Time was flying though and nobody thought I would get a tiny house built and winterized before the snow fell. But they did not really know me. My determination. I got to work building my dream tiny house.
I did manage to build the tiny house and winterize it before the snow fell. Again I had lots of advice from my viewers/friends. I also had people come over to help building from time to time.
Working on tiny house
I set up a garden, raised chickens and made maple syrup. I was striving to become self sufficient. I was already fully off the grid. I had no wires coming to my land. I was a mile from the last paved road. I was a quarter mile from the last house.
Later I made a contract with the land lady of the property I was staying on and started to buy the 56 acres of land. I had a land contract which requires no banks and no credit checks. My mortgage was $1,500 a month. I kept my bills to a minimum though so I could afford the payment. I was alone and had nothing to lose so I put my all into that land payment each month.
I was living the life. I was a land owner so to say.
But I was alone. Very alone.
One day I met my beautiful wife Melanie. We talked and talked and talked. I flew over to Manila to propose to her. Not long after, we were married and living together in "our" tiny house on wheels.
I built a rain water storage shed, improved the rain water collection system. I improved my solar power system. Improved the garden. Literally everything improved in this year. There were two of us now. Two people with the same goals. We were a family.
Not too long after we found out that a baby was on the way.
I will spare you the drama but my trolls were not silent. Things got very bad. You see, Troy cannot have this good life. It must be destroyed.
Eventually we moved to Michigan where we could raise our child in relative peace compared to New York.
We found a quiet little property with 18 acres of land, a mobile home, chalet and a garage.
I put two Amish built sheds on the land. One was to become my electronics lab. One was to become my wood shop.
I ran my solar panels to the electronics lab. I now had a fully off grid electronics shop and an off grid wood shop.
I put solar panels on the house too.
But here I must stop. The rest I have been uploading on a daily basis.

But from my understanding, if law enforcement indeed came to your place following some tips they received, it would be fair to assume that they had reasons to investigate. The result of the investigation did not lead to charges pressed against you so it seems to me that it is case closed.

Well everyone knows that we were run out due to you guys harassing us to no end. With a baby on the way we could not stay in such a dangerous place anymore. I have witnesses of the constant vandalism and trespassing 3x a week. Too bad the NY authorities just dont care.

Well, you know the entire story. But I will say this for the public.
Ok, here it is. I moved because my YouTube income was dropping because of the constant threats to my viewers. I have screen prints of many of those emails and threats they got if they did not stop watching my videos.
So you see - they are connected.
As to the cameras, well, stupid things have a red eye at night. Easy to spot. Easy to avoid. And easy to pull the memory cards out of and wipe. What you did not know is the cameras left proprietary trace files along with each video file. Those were left behind showing the camera time and date stamps each time a video was recorded.
Videos were wiped tho. Sadly the proprietary files had no information I could get other than the fact that someone wiped my cameras.
How many times at school did you use the “The dog ate my homework” excuse? The narrative that people were threatened if they didn’t stop watching your videos is ludicrous.
I just love how you guys deny stuff that is openly posted on the internet for the World to see. Boy, how dumb do you think people are?????
I JUST SUBSCRIBED! I am so proud and happy for you. Sometimes you just know when it is time to leave the corporate world and head out on your own. Just like you, we go through so many challenges before we can stand on our feet financially on our own. Thank you for sharing your story, with blogging and videos. You give us all hope, those of us who have to make it on our own.

If making YouTube videos and maintaining websites for a living is a fraud and scam then I am guilty as charged. But Google pays my bills. And before you guys started to destroy my life, I was paying a mortgage of $1,500 a month on that land in NY.
The ironic thing is that you tell me to get a job, while destroying the best paying job I ever had. And that when I have a newborn baby to care for.

That is exactly why that Sucks group exists! You DONT take advice. And you give little credit to your to your subs. Even when there is constuctive criticism you delete their comments. Anything you dont like is deleted and the subs labled trolls and are blocked from your channel! Hence the sucks forum!!!

Living off the grid sounds about right with how things are going right now.
I feel it is important to have backups in case of emergency. We have multiple ways to cook. Multiple sources of power and backups for failure. Basically we have backups of everything.
I lived through two hurricanes in NY which caused severe devastation, blizzards, power outages and more.
It feels good to not stress when these things come.

Thank you. It is really beautiful here on our new property.
In the tiny house we did have hot and cold running water, heat, cooking and enough power for our needs. It took time to get these comforts and a lot of work but to me it was worth it all.
do you have solar? if so, is it enough for the winter?
this has always been an issue over here... limited electricity in the rainy long days :)
My electronics lab and off grid wood shop are good. I have over 800 watts of solar panels charging batteries. I can run anything I want out there.
The house has only 600 watts of solar panels until I get my leg healed up. Stretched the ligaments.
Then I will have 800 - 1000 watts of solar panels going to a battery bank to an inverter and then the house.
We only use 2 KW per day on the power meter right now so it will be good to get those extra panels hooked up.
I hope to use battery backup, portable rechargeable devices and rechargeable LED lights inside the tiny house during the evenings to reduce power use.

Why is your homestead temporary?
Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely take the advice and put more into my posts. This place is temporary because I rent this house here, to much in a rural area for what I'm looking to do. I can't get animals here because of city ordinances and I know if something happens they will go after the home owner and not me so I won't be able to fight them on it. So I'll be looking for a place where that should not be an issue. Right now I have a problem getting my credit score where it needs to be to qualify for a loan. With a family that ain't on board with my direction, hopes and dreams I unfortunately will have to take out a huge loan and provide a home for them. Hoping and praying that by spring we can find a house with some land and get started with animals, gardens, food forest and permaculture ideas that I've been studying on the past two years through others on YouTube. We are in Lewiston, my wife, little baby, and I. Way up North. We have 18 acres of land now out in the country. Clean and peaceful here.
I also never had credit so I was originally buying land in New York on a land contract. Ask your local realtor about that. Study online first tho because many realtors dont know about it.
Basically though you buy directly from the owner. No banks. No credit checks. Just a notarized and registered contract between two parties.

It's being use here in the Philippines already, i have searched they are using waterproof storm. Proof kinda solar thingy and offers 20yrs warranty (notsure if true)

Rags to riches? You didnt fix the car for months because it would cost $50.00 and you whined you didn't have the money. Your hot water heater went. Again whined you didn't have the money. What did you do with the material from the demolished trailer? I heard that you threw it in the woods of the property instead of disposing of it legally. Is that true?Did you pull the proper permits and build the structure to code? Wondering? Did you sell it (tiny shack) when you abandoned the property and left a crap-load of stuff behind?
As I showed years ago on my videos, we recycled that material. Would have been a horrible waste not to. Its all money in the pocket for the new build.
You do not need permits for a camper/trailer/tiny house on wheels. Its a camper so to say, but you know that too. Otherwise you guys would certainly have won the battle against me and had me kicked out. But you never could.

This is a great money making idea for you Troy . I watched a fellow Youtuber from NY state who has since moved to Michigan do this . It's brilliant and your subs will love it also . What this genius would do is start some type of project , complete 60 to 70 percent and then whine and complain that he didn't have enough funds to complete the task . His subs would then send donations and gifts to the wretched fellow out of sympathy . Now this is the brilliant part , read closely . He was a proclaimed Christian soul and would never deceive a person . His subs of course took his word as gospel . Whatever this man claims is surely the truth . He would then claim the project was finished but not film the competed task . Pocket the donated cash and sell the gifts on CL . Absolutely brilliant . What do you think of this idea Troy ? Does it seem a little dishonest or just a fantastic idea ? I truly hope you can give me your opinion on this . I will post this on every video .

An opinion on the Land Contract between Mrs. Marcia Wright & Troy W. Reid dated and notarized 29 July 2015.
Reid did NOT mention having a boundary survey done with stakes at the corners to verify the specific property dimensions. How would Reid know when folks were trespassing or when he encroached the neighbors land? Did he count on divine intervention from select texts in his battle bible? Allegedly handed over $15k as a down payment + $1500/month not knowing whether the land occupied was clear of any encumbrances? How did he know if Mr. Russell Wright had a wife or wives prior to Marcia, if they still held dower & courtesy rights, title and/or produced entitled heirs? If the contract was a valid one it would have contained the docket book number, block & lot numbers of land Mrs. Wright was to convey upon payment in full of the contract, until then the land was exclusively hers & obligation for taxes. Reid limited legal recourse by not paying for a title search before signing the contract devoid any knowledge of the land's history. Was it once the sight of a tannery, mine, cemetery, slaughterhouse, farm, battlefield, possible easement on the water rights such as maintenance of dams or bridges. Upon change of title designated as private forest with a reduced property tax rate it would legally require a variance to reside on the land in compliance with any/all health & building codes.
Reid was granted rights to occupy that land but not reside. Reid occupied the land with 160' long 10' wide lead paint demolished barn wood, roadside garbage, junk vehicles, rotting RV's, boats, tractors, & trailers. He failed to include the term exclusive. Troy could now legally hunt on that property complying with NY DEC regulations. Reid stepped on that land mine with both feet lamenting last year hunters were on the land illegally chasing away the deer. Marcia had every right to honor and/or revoke hunting rights granted in the past, while retaining title to the land. The timbers are specifically NOT granted to Reid & remain the exclusive right of Marcia, even the maple sap to harvest as she saw fit. It's a riddle that Reid failed to get in writing rights to use the timbers. Reid demonstrated on videos standing like a piece of dead from the neck up wood when contractors downed timbers with easement/access rights for their vehicles, under no obligation to fulfill Reid's alleged barter of timbers for gravel. Despite advertising Old Growth Firewood on the internet Reid exploited Mrs. Wright's property & her fair share of profit. Contractors were not strategically clearing timbers providing sunlight for solar panels, all profit from the timbers, are Marcia's alone.
Reid might as well have had strapped to his back a Vegas styled neon sign flashing S T U P I D. By going cheap thinking himself the more savvy of the two, certainly proved himself a six foot stack of dumb sh*t by not retaining a NY attorney to represent his interest in this first major real estate transaction. From the looks of that simple document, to wit, no educated consumer would have penned their signature.
